Would a Royal Pleco in a 40g (size is roughly 2-3" as of now) be suitable. I'll probably be purchasing a 55g within a 6-12 month period. I have the driftwood and essentials. Tank mates are 1 Gold, 1 Opaline, 1 Dwarf Guarami, 1 adult angel, and a Juvinile BGK.

I wouldn't - 13" fish don't belong in 55g tanks (IMO).

Royal plecos grow EXTREMELY slowly. If you think you'll be able to upgrade to a 90 gallon tank within 5 years, you should be fine.

Within 5 years I could upgrade... Is that keeping in a 40 or buying a 55 and then a 90? If I could wait for a 90+ I'd rather do that. I could probably pick one up in 3-4 years.

I've had a few common plecos and now rehoused three of them, they grew up to be amazing fish. My last one was a great looking high fin, he had great spotted markings and even a slight shade of diamonds on his back. I gave him away to a friend a couple days ago. I had him at 1" and he is now 6" after 4 months!

If anyone remembers I tried to house a Gold Nugget and he died in two days with no explination besides the LFS had it for over 4 months so I think it just didn't want to be moved and died of stress. I got store credit back and ended up seeing this one while picking up dog food. I did pick him up just 30min ago and he is a lot more lively than the Gold Nugget was. I think he looks more amazing than the Gold and he is only half the cost of the gold... Now I gots more plant moneys!

A std 55 and 90 have the same 4 foot length. I'd opt for the 90 for more floor space.

I would buy the tank now but my darn GF would kill me... I told her it wouldn't take up room, all i gots to do is turn the stand into a nice book case / supply storage unit and we can throw out our crappy one... Plus it's in my room anyway. Bah, women.

But we do live in a 650sq ft apt with an 80lbs dog so maybe she is right... The GF is always right.

I would get the fish as you are going to have to upgrade to a MUCH bigger tank for your BGK anyway.

Ya, no kidding. The BGK is an awesome fish and I show him off all the time. I enjoy him greatly but god I was such a newb when I bought him. I had no idea wtf I was doing. Really, thank god for you guys cause I know my fish are happier since I've been here. Even if I get the 90ish size it still won't be big enough for him. Ah well, I'm sure someday I'll find someone who wants him.

I did get the Royal and he is a beautiful looking fish. He is very active and seems very happy with his new surroundings. He is about 1 1/2 - 2 inches in size, very cute lil guy. I hate to say that I'm super paranoid with this guy cause that Gold Nugget died in my tank so fast. I keep checking on him to make sure he's ok.

I want a nice stand too, what's this Craiglist you speak of?

Anyway, woke up this morning and he is still alive, yay! I'm still super nervous from my last experience. He is a really active hungry lil guy. I have many hiding spots but he just wants to eat and eat. He doesn't looked starved or anything he's just young and hungry.

Yes, I have a a nice size piece of driftwood for him. He's been munching on it all day. He does nothing but eat so far, it's really fun to watch him. I've never had a pleco that doesn't really care about the light.

Welp, he is still alive so that's a plus. He finally found the cucumber last night and ate out the middle and now he's finally slowed down. I think he finally caught up to his appetite. He's now just chilling on the driftwood but he isn't sucking on it at all.
