About an hour ago, I dropped by the local 24/7 Wal-Mart for a late-night kitty litter run. The litter is housed in the general vicinity of the fish department, and, as I was walking by, I spotted a handsome little pair of long-finned albino Corydoras chilling in the tank with the regular albino cories.
I used to keep and breed these guys when I was little, and have always been quite fond of them.. but I'd never seen this particular variant before. (Needless to say, I am now the proud owner of a handsome little pair of long-finned albino cories.)
My predicament is this. I am fairly certain that I have one male and one female. If this is the case, I've never had a pair that didn't spawn. I would love it if they *did* spawn, but the thing is, I suspect that they are related, and I don't want to end up with hordes of sickly, inbred fry that nobody wants. (Nor do I have the room to set up dozens of tanks in which to house said sickly, inbred fry that nobody wants.)
I'd like to increase my gene pool, preferably with some fish from a more reputable source.. (and I'd like to give them at least another pair of cories to school with). The thing is, I have absolutely no idea where to go about finding these fish. I have been to a number of local fish shops, some of which stock a fairly wide variety of Corydoras, but I have never seen them with long fins before. Are these cories particularly difficult to come by, or am I just not looking hard enough?
If anyone has breeding experience.. if I were unable to find more long-finned cories and decided to pair them with some of the regular-finned variety, what would the resulting offspring look like? Would they inherit the longer fins, the traditional fins, or something in between?
At this point, I am just crossing my fingers and hoping they make it. (Our Wal-Mart is not known for stocking particularly healthy or well-bred fish. I suspect that this probably applies to most, if not all Wal-Marts.) They look to be in fairly good shape, though, so I'm pretty optimistic.
