i am an unrepenting algae farmer! thats right,i actually encourage it and wish more would,i don't know where the idea that algae is ugly came from but i love the look unchecked algae growth provides, its good for the fish and th water quality, don't get me wrong,i wouldnt want it in my reef or planted tanks, but in say an african cichlid setup? hell yeah! let it grow baby! it frustates me that its impossible to find any info about the POSITIVE effects of algae growth in an aquarium :wall: the futility of trying to stop nature from taking its course and going the extra step and putting algaecides in your tanks is the dumbest thing i see in this hobby,, i love reading about folks flipping out over their nitrate levels and buying all kinds of unnecessary crap to "balance" their water,,guess what bonehead? algae is natures way of doing this for you! so wake up folks and LET IT GROW!

:welcome: to AC!

I would suggest that you please be a little more polite.:) We appreciate your opinions no matter whether people like to hear it or not however calling whoever hates the algae "bonehead" or anything else is just not right.

I do agree that algae has its advantages. I actually don't mind a little algae as long as rampant growth is kept in check. Furthermore, I abhor the practice of using chemicals to kill algae. Many chemicals we used have active ingredients that are deadly not only to the plants and algae but to the fish as well. Why, in MFK, someone shared his experience losing several fish due to an algae killing chemical. Many others also posted in there to share their similar experiences.

While it has it's benefit, it is not always desirable and many folks do not care for the look of it.

Kind of like the fish we keep. We all have different opinions on what looks nice.

I think it can easily be controlled without chemicals.

Welcome. I let it grow everywhere but the front glass.

I do not see a problem with letting some algae grow in your aquarium as long as it is not out of control. Algae on the rocks and driftwood for example will make the aquascape look more natural and is actually good for some fish such as algae eating fish. I also tend to leave algae on th sides of the glass and on the back panel of the aquarium for the fish. I do not see a problem with leaving it there and only cleaning the front panel of the aquarium so you can actually see into the aquarium. Using chemicals for the most part is frowned upon. There are so many more natural ways to clean up the algae in a tank if it is so desired and is actually preferred.
