So I've been battling an aiptasia outbreak for several months with no luck- injecting lemon juice, kalk- no luck. Got a peppermint shrimp- doesn't seem to be interested in eating them. The piece of rock they came with is beautiful and covered in coralline and lots of creatures so I don't want to boil it. The aiptasia are now fairly large and I'm wondering what would happen if I just went in and cut them close to their base. They won't release any toxic substances, right? And if I get their whole head/tentacley/mouth area and most of the stalk that should kill them? I'm hoping so because they are taking over. Just wanted to check before I cause a major issue for my clownfish, corals and other inhabitants. Thanks!

I do not believe that cutting them will solve your problem. Many of the nuissance anemones can regrow from a very small piece of tissue.

i've eradicated aiptasia in my tank by using a filefish [not sure of the exact name right now] borrowed it from my LFS and returned it after the nems were gone. easy and simple [apart from getting the fish out] process.

LOL That was a sweet solution alcohologist.

I used a butterfly fish to ream mine out.

I developed some on some new rock I bought for my refugium (thank god, have yet to see any in my DT, but I have 2 peppermint shrimp in there too) and by pure coincidence I happened to have moved a zoa/anemone eating hitchiking nudibranch into there a few days prior. Aptasia hasn't been seen since.
