I think 1.3 watts per gallon is a bit low. I grow them in 2.5-3 watts of light.

I've heard of them growing in 1-1.5 WPG before, you can try.

Give it a try! I currently have jungle vals in a 125 gallon that have grown up to the top of the tank (24"+!!). All of this and I've only got 120 watts or so, play sand for a substrate and little to no liquid ferts! Vals are one of those things that do well in some peoples tanks, but really suck in others. No rhyme or reason to it in my opinion. I have a 40br with press co2, 2.5 wpg, liquid ferts, and sand substrate and that one cant grow vals for some reason. If you're not sure, order some from here:

at $7.90 for 10 plants, its cheap enough to experiment with it! Let us know how it goes, and get us some pics when you get it set up!!
