Its just starting to get hot around here, (around 103) but the tank is getting really hot and I already unplugged the heater days ago and the temp won't drop. I think with the PC lights on it is making it too hot. Right now the temp is about 87 in the tank but I think it might get even hotter within the week. I don't have an AC either. Should I take off the PC lights for the summer and just use a regular flourescent?

You could also try using some fans. Some use the computer fans, I used to use a tall floor standing fan and now I have the clip on ones. One set in the sump and one set on the display tank.

If you haven't got anything that relies on light in your tank, then I don't see an issue in changing your lights.

Oh my god, No Air conditioning in Los Angeles? I live in upstate New York and I recently had central A/C put in because it may get to 90 once or twice a year here. I hate the hot weather. That's why I moved here from Texas.

You could break down and buy a chiller so at least your fish have A/C. A fan will make you have to keep up with top-off's so your SG doesn't get out of wack.

I'm in Orange County and am having the same prob. The fans do help quite a bit, and the bottles are a good idea with a temp of 87! I have tried to cut down on my pc lighting in the heat of the day which seems to help. I hope you don't lose any livestock. Good luck Jess.

If your going downt eh fan route, keep a close eye on evap as more will occur...

Fan coupled with a simple auto-topoff system could help. I just built a new hood for my system and since my lights are pretty hot I built in two 120mm fans, now I'm considering an auto top off of some sort myself.

Ya if it starts nearing 90 then dump some ice in the sump or something...I live in LA too and the hottest mine has gotten is 85.6. The AVERAGE around the world is 82 for a reef so meaning it could range up to as high as 90 possibly but also rarely most likely. Everything will be fine.

Or just get a air conditioner :/

if you don't have anything that needs the PC's then def change them out for fluorescents. with the wrasses i assume the tank is covered - is it just covered with eggcrate or is it a full cover? i'd blow a fan or 2 over the top and throw in a 2L of ice when it gets really hot if it were me...
