So I just ordered a new coralife t5 double strip light from Big Al's. I know it is not the best of light as I should get a PC one, but funds are low and this is the best I could come up with. I want a low light plants set up (some of my plants are doing ok even with the crappy 30w I have) in my 46 gal tank.

I also got some Flourish Excel and Flourish both by Seachem. I just want to make sure that they are pretty safe to use in my tank? I've got angels, cardinals, plecos & cories. I just wanted a general fertilizer for the plants. Guess I should have posted this question before placing my order, but I was in a hurry last night.

If these are not good, what kind of ferts should I use? I'm really new to the planted tank requirements!

I've used excel and other brands of liquid ferts (NPK Plant Gro) with Neons, Endlers, Corys, Gouramis, Bettas and Otos with no problems. The only thing is some plants don't like excel, most notably Vals.

My comment is contrary to most of the literature concerning algae with respect to light intensity but based on my experience I would start dosing at half the recommended dosage and increase the dosage slowly until algae appears (yes: algae will get you even with very low lighting) and then back off the dosing some for your permanent maintenance.

Thanks. I figure I was just going to start with 1/2 dose. I do not want to hurt anything in the tank! :)
