Aqua-cultured rock is a responsible way to go since you are not destroying reefs to get it. Also, and equally important - it totally rocks. I got mine at TampaBaySaltwater and I'll never buy anywhere else. Here's a link to pics of what he sent for my live rock: http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=147828&page=11

To answer your 'how much' question, like most things salty it would depend on a few things. If you are going reef most would recommend 1 to 1 1/2 pounds per gallon, this will serve as your filtration (for the most part). If you are going FOWLR then I don't think there is a real guide line but some hidong places for the fish is really good and in my opinion it also looks nicer.

Good luck with your choices. There are even some recipes for making your own rocks, if seen some good examples and not so good...

Thanks a Bunch D.J. I've been super happy with it. The guy I got it from leases 5 acres of the ocean and "grows" the rock. He sends a crazy amount of "extras" with it as well which is really cool when you are setting up a new tank because it gives you even more to look at. He only does business with individual folks - not retailers - so if you wanted LR from him, just go to: http://www.tampabaysaltwater.com/

Best of luck with whatever you get. This is such a great hobby. I have trouble tearing myself away from the tank. I can stare for hours.
