So I have a golden (Butterfly) brig and a striped yellow (Birdseye) brig who have been very busy lately. I left 3 inches clear at the top of the tank for Birdseye, and this morning she was still laying a large clutch of eggs. Cool! This is my very first foray into inverts, so what now? The 10g tank with the snails also has 3 balloon mollies (no babies there yet) and 7 neons - can I safely leave the babies to grow up there, or should I move the clutch in a few days to a different location? I have some empty tens I can set up if need be as well as an empty 20 (but I had other plans for it). I've read about floating the clutch in a humid environment (the tank?)- what do those of you who have done this typically do? Thanks!

Each clutch can produce 50-200 babies (see my baby snail teaser pics, that is once clutch of babies!!) so you may reconsider hatchign the entire clutch. I usually remove the clutch after about 24 hours. The come off the glass pretty easy. I take a small tupperware container and put a just barely damp papertowel folded into quarters into the bottom. Then i layer 3 more DRY paper towels folded in quarters on top. I then lay the clutches on top of the paper towels and tightly lid the container. Then I float it in the top of the tank under the lights. Check the container daily for condensation and wipe any condensation out of the lid. If the upper towels are damp, replace with dry ones. After 10 days or so, you will notice the clutch having a very moldy appearance, this means its ready to hatch. At that time, I either float it on some sponge in a breeder trap, or more often break it open and empty the babies into the breeder trap. Baby snails need to eat frequently and can exhaust quickly from searching for food. The breeder trap ensures that they can reach food easily. I leave them in the trap until they are pea-sized, then release them into a very established tank. Please be aware that you need permits to ship the snails to new homes. Also, most LFS will only take more mature snails (which can take a couple months for them to get that size) so before you hatch, be prepared to deal with the babies. I get about 4-6 clutches a week from my snails, so rest assured you will get more if you are not prepared to hatch this one. Lastly, Congrats!

I'd like to try hatching this one. If I can't find homes for the babies locally I'll stick them in the 55g and see who survives the dojo loaches. If I have more clutches, how are they as fish food if I drop them in the water?

Snail eggs were looking pretty moldy this morning just as jinx said they would, so I put them on a sponge and they started to hatch. You can see a few in this pic (which sucks) little brown dots around the main clutch

I broke the clutch up as some had suggested, and here are a bunch of babies climbing the side of the breeder box

I put some blanched zuccini in with them, but any suggestions for the best baby snail diet? I am going to take some to a little algae farm I have going at work, but suggestions for the others would be welcome.....should I make them the jello or something? I've never really prepped snail cuisine before.

WOOOHOOO! Congrats!! I feed them little postage stamp sized pieces of zucchini, algae wafer, crab cuisine...really anything. Normally i break up the clutch and let the leftover clutch fall into the water which they feed on for the first day.

Do you have babies after only 9 days? How many do you think there are? A HUGE Congratulations!!! I hope my clutch hatches. :headbang2:

When you say "moldy" what exactly do you mean? msjinkzd I know you used that term but does the clutch get fuzzy or something?
