It started about a month ago, looks to be pretty thick. the plants in this tank did not do well, the only living plant is the kind that you attach to a log or something. not sure what its called. Any ways its now covering another log in the tank to. what eats it?

as you can see by the other tank. my plants are doing very well... but my 55 gallon tank the plants all suffered some form of algae attack, so I took them all out.all but one that is.
here is the plants ( or a small portion of them in my 29.

its blue green algae.

Possible causes
Very low nitrates or higher levels of other nutrients.
Dirty substrates and filters can also bring it on.
Poor water circulation

Possible solutions
Check water stats
Improving water circulation can also help to reduce this algae.
If all else fails a black out could be the way to remove it.
As a last resort you could use “erythromycin” but this WIIL affect the bacteria in the filter so great care must be taken.

I do a 50% water change each week, I have 2 emperiors on it, and my gravel is vac'd each and ever week.
water stats are normal, no nitrites, 5 nitrates

ok, so maybe I need a power head in there? I also have a sponge filter set for a 55 gallon tank. I would have thought there was more then enough filtration in this tank.

Have you ever checked phosphate? High phosphate can also cause bga (which is really cyanobacteria) to appear, even in a well maintained tank - some tap water can have phosphate in it as well.

yes, I have high phosphates. I have had a problem with brown algae forever in this tank also. its not a new tank several years old and I am still fighting diatoms. my tap is loaded. not even sure how to get rid of it. I just do weekly cleaning scedules and try to keep ahead of it.

I just read this..... I have carbon in all my filter media!! I use those disposable filters for the emperior. I am beginning to think this is my problem!! Before I was using bio bags with out the carbon, my problem all but went away.... now my plants are covered in brown crap, and now green blue crap. I had to acually dump my plants as they were covered and I could not get it off. I treid flourish etc. to no avail. I just changed all my filter medio but one bag, I will wait until the new filters are established and add just floss to that one to and see if my problems are starting to clear up. I will take this log out tomorrow and scrup it clean.

oh and I noticed after fighting forever with brown in my 29 I seem to have gotten some of it back there to. Now I really believe its the filters pre loaded with the carbon, before I never used carbon, only bio bags. but with the new emperior it just seemed like the thing to do, adding the pre made cartridges. OYE I believe I am finding my problem

I don't understand, could you explain how the carbon contributes to algae? I also have a problem with algae, but staghorn algae.
