My prism skimmer is just terrible. only one time it really did its job. i always have to watch it to see if it needs adjusting. at one point it seems like it is doing good with some nasty brown foam, then maybe a few hours later the flow stops and no more foam. i really need a new one because it just isnt cutting it. i need a hang on tank skimmer though because i dont have much room and i dont have a sump. i have a 36 gallon aquarium with 4 damsels and a feather duster. The worst part is Im goig away for two weeks in july and im afraind that the skimmer will stop working and even though i have an aquarium expert watching my tank, they only know about freshwater. I need something reliable.

I use the CPR Backpack and haven't had any problems with it. It does a good job of getting gunk out of the tank. The only maintenance it needs on a regular basis is to empty out the cup.
Every month I pull the powerhead out of the tank and rinse it out. I also pull the skimmer out from behind the tank every 4-6 months to rinse it out. I just got a bubble trap on the outlet which gets rid of the bubbles. I love it.
