reactors and diffusers

Has anyone used the Red Sea CO2 Reactor 500 w/Pump? Does it work with a diy co2 setup rather than just the pressurized?

How about the glass and ceramic diffusers? I was reading on some site and it made it sound like you had to replace one of these every so often. Is that true?

Any help would be great! Thanks!

I just built my own reactor out of PVC pipe. It's a modified version of Rex Grigg's:

http://www.rexgrigg.com/diy-reactor.htm

The differences with mine are ball valves at every connection, it's roughly 10" longer, and rather than a cap at the bottom, I installed a reducer with a connection for draining the tank from my cannister filter outlet (which has a panty hose cover on it!). I set my outlet at mid tank...so I can do a 50% water change without even being around the tank lol. Once the suction breaks, I move the hose over to the kitchen sink, and away I go refilling. Only way to do 150gal water changes =/.

Anyhow though, the size thing is also why I went with a reactor rather than a diffuser. I really liked the tiny tiny bubbles, but it would take multiple diffusers to get the sort of surface area I need to Co2 inject 300gal.

Anyhow, hope the link helps, and I'll see about getting some pictures up of my reactor (it's built, but not installed yet!)

C.Anderson: it would be fun to see your reactor. Right now i am only planning on using CO2 in a 30, and a 20L (heavily planted.) So i dont have quite the same problem. I have a simple diy diffuser now in a 75gal, that does not seem to be effective at all. (I am planning to change this tank over to a cichlid tank with rocks, java fern and moss.)

Fordtrannyman: I have been leaning towards that one. Somehow the other seems too simple...
