Ok so some of you might have read my previous thread o me switching from crushed coral to sand, and had some problems even though I did everything I was supposed to do. Since I have no more fish and brand new substrate, its like Im starting over. My tank is 36 gallons. I mix my own water and let it go for about 6 days then put it in. I have a dual compact flourescent light fixture with a 65 watt 6,700 k/10,000 k bulb, and a 420/460 actinic. I have a Rena Filstar Xp 1 with carbon, purigen, a micron filter, 1 coarse foam pad, and one fine foam pad. I have about 70 lbs. of sand with a 3 inch thick layer. I have about 25 to 30 lbs of live rock, i plan to get some more. The only hitch hiker i have ever had was one tiny little feather duster on this interesting piece that looks like a leaf. I have had no others. I also have a few pieces of CaribSea reef rocks that are probably live by now. The dust finally settled and I arranged my rock, but Im not sure how I like it so I might change it a little. I also kept some old shells from dead snails to put in for hermit crabs when I get them. I have a lot of algae growing on my rocks, which caught a lot of the dust and it looked like it snowed in my tank. I cleaned the dust of as best I could. I also have a Prizm Skimmer which does not do a good job because it doesnt produce much foam and stops running sometimes. I plan to get a Bak-Pak skimmer or Aqua C Remora. So thats it about my tank. I havent checked the ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates yet. Im gonna do that tomorrow. I really want to get a clean up crew going because algae grows pretty fast in my tank due to it being right next to a window where it gets tons of sunlight. I want to get a clean up crew made up of things that will eat algae and detritus. I was thinking of about ten snails, but not sure what kind, as well as 10 hermits. I also want to get a sand sifting sea star because I really like them.
Now because I have no hitchhikers, except for the little feather duster, I want to know if there are any site that sell them. I found one site called Indo-Pacific Sea Farms that sell mini stars, copepods, bristleworms, etc. but im not too sure about them and the prices they have.
I dont have a set plan for stocking the tnak, but I do have a list of things I would like to have, however I know with my small tank I cant have them all. This is where I need someone's help because I dot yet know enough about SW fish to know what can and cant go in my tank. I want to get a clown fish, a firefish, and a royal gramma. Again I also want to get like 10 hermits and 10 snails, and a sandsifting starfish. I also want to get a cleaner shrimp but I dont know if the size of my tank would allow. Also, I love feather dusters. Would I be able to get like 2 of these as well? I would really apreciate it if someone could give me an idea for a list. Maybe even a sample list or something that would work with my tank. Any ideas for detritus eating things would be helpful as well. I also want to add some macroalgae. Thanx. I know this is a really long post. I will post pics.

<<Sounds all fine..A good skimmer will aid you no end>>

I really want to get a clean up crew going because algae grows pretty fast in my tank due to it being right next to a window where it gets tons of sunlight. I want to get a clean up crew made up of things that will eat algae and detritus. I was thinking of about ten snails, but not sure what kind, as well as 10 hermits.

<<Nertite or Astrea snails are good choices as both these species together will cover you for the algae and detritus. Hermits, sure, red or blue, they are both the same. Some people have had bad experiences with them, and i am sure they will shout up about this, however, in the "Norm", they are fine>>

I also want to get a sand sifting sea star because I really like them.

<<I would wait untill the aquarium has matured, 9 months plus at least to allow micro-fauna and other life to populate the sandbed, else it will simply starve to death>>

Now because I have no hitchhikers, except for the little feather duster, I want to know if there are any site that sell them. I found one site called Indo-Pacific Sea Farms that sell mini stars, copepods, bristleworms, etc. but im not too sure about them and the prices they have.

<<Prices dont mean much to me either as i'm in the UK, however, i dont see any problems with addding life to the sandbed / tank to give it a boost>>

<<No problem with them in this size of tank>>

Again I also want to get like 10 hermits and 10 snails, and a sandsifting starfish.

<<As above, ok for snails and hermits, leave the star out>>

I also want to get a cleaner shrimp but I dont know if the size of my tank would allow.

<<A pair or lysmata cleaner shrimps would be just fine>>

Also, I love feather dusters. Would I be able to get like 2 of these as well?

<<Yes, i see no reason why not, they are just filter feeders>>

I would really apreciate it if someone could give me an idea for a list. Maybe even a sample list or something that would work with my tank.

<<Please do read through my article, paying attention to the cleanup crew area, and there is a list of fish which are suitable for a 30 gallon system, you may get some ideas from that, then post up your up to date thoughts on stocking..

http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=123455 >>

Any ideas for detritus eating things would be helpful as well. I also want to add some macroalgae.

<<No problem. If you have no sump or refugium, then some people will use a breader net in the display tank, and fill it full of macro algae for nutrient export.>>

Thanx. I know this is a really long post. I will post pics.

Added some comments above in red. Hope it helps.

Thanks alot. Yea I definately didnt have plans to put a starfish in anytime soon. I know with the sand sifting star it needs plenty in sandbed to eat or it will starve. I know there are a lot of people who dont like hermits. I know as long as I have extra shells for them they wont go after snails. Thanks for the help.

Ok so I found a new favorite lfs today. For such a small place they have such a big selection, but unfortunately today they were all out of stuff because they didnt get their shipment in for the week. What I got were my snails and hermits and they guy gave me free macro algae.I thinks its grape caulerpa. not exactly sure how to spell it. They guy there was really knowledgable and didnt want to sell me just anything without knowing if i can take care of them. My dad wanted to get a flame scallop but I said no. I dont know anything about them and me and my tank arent ready for that. I just wanted to get my cleanup crew going because of my microalgae is gorwing too much right now. they aslo had sand sfiting stars but again not yet. They get percula clowns, royal grammas, and fire fish so everything i want is there when I am ready to get them. I didnt have time to get pics today so I will after work.

I just noticed that I put they alot instead of the. Anyway, I have my clean up crew going and they are really going at the algae. Next Thursday the store gets its shipment in so I will probably be gettin my clownfish that day. I also want to get a cleaner shrimp and they are much cheaper there than at the other place I went to. I wish I knew this place was there before because I would have gone there when I first started my aquarium. Oh, how do I put pics up?

yea its a bow front. ok i just found out how to post them. didnt realize how easy it was. I gotta upload them to my computer.
