I saw something I've never seen in person before the last time I went to my lfs. they were filter feeding shrimp about 2-3" or so. they weren't labeled and I wanted to learn more about them.

Other filter feeders are:

Vampire Shrimp- Atya gabonensis
Green Lace Shrimp- Atyoida pilipes
Lace Shrimp- Atyoida cf. pilipes

btw-the bamboos are Atyiopsis mollucensis.

It's likely a Bamboo Shrimp, the other species aren't imported often, and rarely end up at a LFS.

are there any filter shrimp that live their whole lives in freshwater?

Not sure, but I think that with the bamboo shrimp, they only need brackish water when they are young. So if you buy an adult it will be fine. Only if you are breeding do you need to worry about brackish water.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that's true.

from my understand, that is the case.

I've got a couple of these guys.. they're pretty neat.. I usually feed my tank with Kent Marine micro-vert (after a WC) and a few drops of liquid fry food the day before a WC.

They are interesting little creatures and can be fun to watch.. the other day, I noticed one of mine trying to crawl into the out flow of the powerhead he was feeding at.. he would get in, then barrel roll a whole bunch in the current... and pop out only to take his place back on the driftwood with his buddies. PIGGY!

Frank sell filter feeders. He has 4 listed but is currently out of stock on all but the Green Lace Shrimp- Atyoida pilipes.
