Well, I put in my first fish last night and all seems well. A beautiful Green Mandarin Dragonet. I know I picked a bad choice of first salt water fish since they generally only eat copepods. I have a couple ten gallons now set up breeding them for him but as an experiment I tried to see if he would eat anything else. Success! He likes both baby brine shrimp and bloodworms!! So no little starvling for me! :headbang2:

That's great, congratulations on your first fish. You already said it in that a Mandarin is't a first fish and should only be introduced to a well established tank so that the LR/tank is already teaming with pods to support their diet. I hope that you continue to have success with him eating the bloodworms and baby brine.
Please keep up your thread so that we all can learn about your Mandarin.

Give him some mysis too. I hear that brine has no nutritional value for them and blood worms are not natural. But ya good luck! Hope it works out well. I lost one of those myself so hope he does fine.

I've got alternatives for him if it looks like he is not going to work out. I'll rehome him before I would ever let him starve. And I KNOW how extremely lucky I am to get a less picky one.

Best of luck with the fish...Just want to say that its been said many times by reefers that their mandarin eats all and sundry, besides pods, only for the mandarin to mysteriously die for "no apparent reason" ( how many times has that been said in a marine post...he he he)...
Good luck, keep us informed...
