I'm contemplating setting up a 33 gallon, 36" long wet pet kind of tank - maybe a single cichlid with some dither fish. I want loads of personality and a fish that doesn't hide all the time (food begging is appreciated :)). If you have suggestions, please indicate whether or not the suggestion is plant friendly (which would be a plus). As an FYI, I don't plan on getting a bigger tank - so I don't need suggestions that will outgrow a tank with a footprint of 36" x 12.5".

While my current inclination is a CA cichlid with some variatus platys or some swordtails (maybe a firemouth...but do they hide a lot?), I'm open to SA or African cichlid suggestions as well.

Thanks,

Eric

No ideas anyone?

No one kept firemouths who could comment on their shyness (or lack thereof)?

I've not kept a firemouth in 25ish years, but I did have T. maculipinnis which is similar - but I don't know how similar (and really rather nasty...at least mine was).

I had a firemouth a while back, I don't recall it being particularly shy.

I can tell you how I started off my 30gal - school of 8 rummynose tetras, a pair of blue rams, and some cories. I had some hatchetfish too but they kept jumping out.

Thanks sploke. I figure about a 4" to 6" centerpiece fish with some platys would make a nice, easy going set up.

Did you have a planted tank and did the firemouth do anything to the plants?

No, when I had the firemouth I only had plastic plants so I can't say anything about how well that would work.

you could keep a pair of convicts in a 33...

If you are looking for one fish, with dithers, it is tough to say, as the larger the cichlid is, the more it is likely to harass and dominate the smaller fish.

You could to an angel fish with dithers, but I have a feeling you are thinking of a more traditional SA Cichlid.

I know, you could keep a large Yellow Labidochromis, or another species of labidochromis (there are blue and a few others as well) as they are docile, and will reach the size you are looking for, and you could keep a school of either Australian Rainbows or Giant Danios.

Just a suggestion

i can think of lots of options. festivum, angels, german blue rams, bolivian rams, keyhole cichlids, firemouth, blue acara, rainbow cichlids, and maybe even swing a salvini (maybe).

How about a pair of keyholes? They are so cute.....

A pair of C. sajica would be nice too.
