My African Knifefish is acting funny

I really don't know what to do by now. I got it from the store, and it's been in my tank for a few days. My water was too alkaline, so I replaced %20. The fish seems kind of okay, but im getting way too worried. First, I thought it was swimming with its head facing down, so it seemed like something was wrong, but it's normal. Then I though it had Oodinium or velevet because it was scratching itself against gravel and decorations and going to the surface for air periodically for air. It turns out that gulping a bit of air is normal for Knifefish. But the scratching has me worried. I put in Ich medication containing Benzaldehyde Green and Nitrofurazone and removed my activated carbon to not filter it out. Then I opened up my fishkeeping book, and strted to read about the diseases, maybe to see if I could diagnose it better. Then I read about hole-in-the-head disease, or lateral-line erosion. When I look at my fish, I see spots that seem to have no skin behind the eyes. They are edged faintly in white, but I don't want this to throw anyone off, the white is EXTREMELY faint, and almost unnoticeable. I also read that fish with hole in the head swim unevenly, and my fish sometimes has tilts, but VERY SLIGHTLY, and again, when I mean a little, I mean it. I am afraid, because if it is what I fear, the fish could be in grave danger. The only good things I can think of right now is that the skinless parts are gray, like the rest of the fish, and is not discolored at all. The other thing that baffles me is that hole in the head occurs in herbivorous fish because of vitamin deficeincy. Knifefish of this kind are strictly carnivorous, so I don't know what is happening. I'm crossing my fingers that it is just ulceration caused by fungus. I am further worried by the fact that it is on the head near the lateral line, and I was doing extensive redecorating after I got the fish, so it might be caused by stress.
So practically, I want to know what is wrong with my fish and what I should do. Thank you.

I'm going to have to say that there aren't a lot of us here with the ability to diagnose illnesses on an African Knifefish. I would suggest joining www.predatoryfish.net/ibforums and posting the symptoms there. They've kept a more diverse range of so-called "Jurassic Fishes" and would be more likely to have faced your predicament before.

i think you are jumping the gun a little here. You shouldnt put in chemicals unless you are sure that the fish has the disease you are trying to treat.

Glancing ( rubbing up against rocks) is a sign of stress. The fish is unhappy in the aquarium here is what it might be-

your water ph etc (check em and check exactly what knife fish need)

what tank mates does he have

if he HAS tank mates are they picking on him?

is there any electronic equipment like a microwave near the tank? (I am not 100% on this but i understand that knifefish use electromagnetic senses that can mean the fish gets ill/upset around electronic gear) ( ill do more reading on this and post more)

does the knife fish have anywhere to hide? they need a place to hide. a quick cheap way is to buy some PVC pipe, just rinse it and put it in.

i just read that the knifefish can be very sensitive to medicines because of its small scales. please break off use of the ich stuff you were using

heres a link to some info

im leaning towards your problem being water chemistry and lack of a hiding place. But if you do work on the water be careful to not make a very sudden change because this can be worse than leaving it at the wrong ph

hope this helps, keep us posted! :)

Hello. Some of you said that electronics might harm the fish. I already know that and had a pvc pipe in the tank for it to hide in since the day I bought it. As for tankmates, all fish in the tank are approximately 1/3 the body mass of the knifefish. As for the medicine, I am not a fool. I knew that the knifefish has small scales, and I only put in 2/3 of the amount of medicine I should have put in. I have since filtered it out though, because GLANCING IS NORMAL for Knifefish. It looks like this is more complicated than I thought. Thank you.

HERE'S MY NEW QUESTION: During early lateral line erosion, what shape is the mark? I heard it is usually lightning bolt shaped or occurs in may small pits. My fish has a round circular skinless area on each side of the head.

That sounds like one of the types of HLLE, NewbieForever...there are many different manifestations, but that's one of them.

Great. What can I do now? It's useless. I hope it will get better on its own. It's a beatiful fish, and I don't want it to die. I just want to know if there's a way to make it better. It will only eat tubifex, which don't have the vitamins of some of the flakes I have. Do frozen and live foods have vitamins?

Can you supplement the Tubifex with some sort of vitamins or feed the worms flake food or something?

A lot of frozen foods available now are live foods dusted with or fed vitamin-enriched food...I'd look into that.
