I'm not sure how they "control the snail population"... I (seriously) didn't know loaches ate snails... I know for a fact many cichlids will.

According to loaches.com, they are effective at removing snails.

An abundance of snails is usually the result of overfeeding--in planted tanks, it can also mean not enough maintenance is being done to reduce the dead plant matter. I usually prefer to reduce snails by controlling the food sources.

Ah, I see... starve them :p
But the loaches don't eat them, do they? Though I'd think they would eat a lot of the snail's food before the snail would have a chance...

Hi,
I used a couple of Dwarf Puffers to get my snails under control. They were fantastic - until the snails were gone. Then they took to nibbling at anything that moved - other fish, plastic plants, you name it. I just sold them back to the pet store. I'm monitoring my feeding closer now.
