I didn't want to hijack the thread below, so will Riccia attach to a piece of slate if it's tied down or would that be too smooth a surface?
Thanks.

Riccia will not attach itself to anything.

How does it grow then, just floating? I thought I've seen it attached to things before, like substrate and mesh.

you can attach it to wood/stones with thread, but riccia does not grow roots.

BKs right, riccia doesn't have any roots. There are 2 ways ive seen it "attached". First you can put a net, such as a fruit or hair net, over the riccia and tie it to the stone. The riccia grows through the net and looks as if it was attached. It is just like a moss wall but with riccia and a stone. Another way is entangling riccia in with some already attached moss on a stone. Its kinda hard to explain but it grows through the moss and the moss branches die under the riccia. The dead branches then hold it in place. But I find the net the easiest way.

also note it wont stay down. i have to replant mine monthly. it will pull off anything and float back up.

Cool, I think I may try the java moss method. I have too much of it anyways.
