Well i rescued it cuz i asked what would be done to the poor thing, who had no fins, tail and was in really poor condition due to the other cichlid in the bag (they just arrived) and he said it was gonna be "done away with" I thought well maybe i can save the poor thing...So this poor guy had no fins, no tail, and is in horrible condition. I want to save it, even if i just find a new home for it ( i know they get big) What can I do to encourage fin growth?

you could try all natural melafix. it repairs damaged fins and open wounds. i would try that. do you have it alone in a tank? that would probably be a good idea as well. some fish like to pick on the weak. just my opinion though..

man from waht ive heard wal mart are dicks we dont have them here in aus but if they did and i saw one that size i would take them under RSPCA law for animal cruelty(im a registered member) for reptiles and aquatics(fish etc) it makes me mad seeing animals in bad conditions before i brought the shop the old owners had convicts with mollys archer fish and some monos and they were wondering why the fish had no fins fungus etc the convicts paired and were in control of the tank. and also trimacs,JDs and 2 fully grown flower horns in a 6ft tank with a via aqua 600 700 LPH max from memory if i had the space and money i would of got all the from the shop and started one my self but inseat the when in dier straits and i brought it off them now i have mollys with mollys, guppys etc no flower horns the monos in a brachosh setup with archer fish, scats etc and i get only a few deaths week

but to answer your question melafix would be the way to go along with aqua blue witch carries more oxygen in the water

"Rescuing" fish makes it possible for Wal-Mart to abuse the next fish that comes along...

childawg is right, its good for that one fish what you are doing, but not for the thousands of others that will take its place.

Well i know, but it was being attacked by another cichlid...anyway, he died last night...I tried all i could, but he didn't make it. I feel really bad, and wish I could havew done more. I am not saying walmart is a good place to buy fish, cuz the people in the fish section are as knowledgeable as a tomato, but they occassionally have pretty good looking fish...any fish that is not up to par is written off and Disposed of. The ONLY reason i rescued him, was to see if I could spare his life...

Gotcha, but try getting it for reduced price or free next time...it will be in the best interest of all involved. Not flaming, just saying...

So he basically gave it to you at his cost. Nice guy. I think you should spend an extra two bucks, buy a nice box and bury it somewhere in the lengerie section of Walmart.

...lengerie in Walmart. I kill me.:p

Ha...

I just did the fish order at my Pet Store, (I'm really the only employee with any knowledge of fish, and manager certainly doesn't know anything, so she just has me doe the order.) Well, I'm never in the store when the fish come in, but sometimes they get put in the wrong tanks by some employee's, (i.e., Dwarf Rainbows with Green Terrors...I dunno how that happened.) A few times, the 1000 Goldfish we ordered as feeders all arrived dead.

And the most hair-raising tale of all - when we moved our fish tanks, it involved removing all the fish and water from the tanks. Apparently the MarineLand Rep helping us move the tank assured us that it would be alright to put all the fish in the same garbage can. Anyone stupid enough to think Baby Convicts would be alright with Jack Dempsey's and about 30 other Cichlids, (including Oscars and Green Terrors,) should be, respectfully, shot. I think of our about 300 fish, we lost about 200 that night. I was pretty pissed when I found out what happened, and almost quit and walked over to PetsMart, (where the supervisor of the fish department and I have a really nice relationship - we both stop by each other's stores and buy fish from each other.)
