What test kits does everyone use for their tanks?:help:
Specifically I guess I'd like to know what I should be testing for as my reef tank continues to grow and develop.
Right now I have the following:
API Ammonia, Nitrates, Nitrites, pH
Red Sea: Ca, pH + Alk, Magnesium

Anything else I should get and what does everyone think of these brands?

The guy at one LFS told me I have to use the same as the company that makes my salt. Guess what? He's also a major dealer for that brand. Is he right or another salesman?

Thanks!

I use api for general water par. (P.H., Ammonia, Nitrate, Nitrite) then salifert for the rest of what I test (as of right now) Phosphate, Alkalinity, Magnesium, and calcium. My LFS has elos test kits that I might try after this batch

Are they the type that are more like a science project than a test?
I have ones for 3 things I don't even remember (because I don't use them at all anymore) that were all powders, trays, cups and all kinds of crap.
I know the others may be a little less accurate but being able to do tests in under an hour or more appeals to me instead of having to mix everything and then clean it all up and document everything.
If I wanted to run a lab I'd do it, but I'm lazy.

I have used nothing but ELOS for almost 2 years, now. I don't think I'll use anything else. These kits are the only ones on the market to be NIST certified to guarantee precision and accuracy. They are very straightforward tests, all being done in a couple of minutes (not combined, obviously). There are no more than three separate parts to add, AFAIK.

I use the API and am very happy with them.

I agree with using API products. I have no true reason for it, think maybe it came from some researching. Usually I test only for ammonia. I also WC weekly as well as in between if I detect any odors.

I use the API basic set and then use Salifert for Magnesium, Phosphate, ALK and Calcium.

I haven't tried the ELOS but will have to check that out if I get another test kit or replace an esxisting one....more reading to do though.
