Don't worry. I have a Velociraptor escape plan and anti-velociraptor ammunition. I'm prepared.

In reality, I don't see it. DNA just doesn't last that long. Scientists are having trouble getting good DNA from rats that were frozen 10 years ago.

The process of fossilization would destroy any DNA.

Even if there was a complete sequence of viable DNA, we can't manipulate it that well yet. We have no idea what proteins, amino acids, and other requirements are needed for dinosaurs. Sure a few educated guesses could be made from birds (depending on the dino), but I doubt it would be that useful.

I think our resources could be put to better use.

Gawd why does science always try and bring to real life the really crummy films ??!??

Cloning Shmoning. Less DNA nonsense, more making me into Spiderman. Or Indiana Jones.

i want to see some kind of dinosaur bfore i die, but think of all the money that could be going to, i dont kno, things that matter. like that 6 billion dollar big bang machine so we could find out how the universe and stuff started. cool, but not important

they can acctually get soft tissue from the bone marrow inside the bones of dinosaurs. they literally "defossilize" it, by taking all of the minerals out of the rock, which was bone.

so if they can get soft tissue from the bones, then DNA isnt that far off.

plus they've been getting DNA from frozen mammoths for years

saw it on the Discovery Channel.

Anybody ask the dinosaur if it wants to come back?

I wonder how much home-owner's insurance would go up, with a small velociraptor in the backyard.

Hmmmm....sure would liven up the vivarium forum.

'HELP I'VE HAD MY T-REX FOR 3 DAYS AND HE WON'T EAT'

"Hi there and welcome to AC :) What have you been trying to feed him ? T-Rex's are sulky types who take a while to settle into a new home. Just turn the lights out in his tank and let him get familiar with his new surrounds. Then try some goat, or as a special treat, the neighbours labrador."

'MY MALE VELOCIRAPTOR KEEPS BITING MY ARMS OFF'

Hi there and welcome to AC :) They can be testy little fellows full of character can't they lol. That's what makes them such great pets ! By the way they are probably brackish.

Anybody ask the dinosaur if it wants to come back?

anyone ask the dinosaur if it wanted to be killed by a giant flying meteor 65 million years ago?

Eh, they're not really talking about recreating dinosaurs, they're talking about deforming birds until they get something that sorta kinda looks like a dinosaur. You can switch off and on important developmental genes in a fly to make it have extra body segments, ending up with something that looks a bit like the ancestor of insects, but it isn't- it's a deformed fly. You could probably also screw around with a human embryo enough to get a short hairy kid with a tiny brain, but that doesn't mean you've recreated an Australopithecus.

This is just publicity-seeking nonsense. Dinosaur paleontology is a tiny field, and they need something to attract attention and funding now and again. There's nothing to be learned about dinosaurs by pursuing this, though it's possible they'll learn a bit about avian genetics and development and technical issues associated with the necessary procedures.

that sounds about right to me notoph.
they do *75% bird, *25% prehistoric bird with 2 "non-related" birds. These *25% prehistoric birds mate and theres *50% bird, *50% prehistoric bird. and so on and so on.
it would never be a true prehistoric bird dino.. but close enough they say.

*not exact percentages, it starts off with a much smaller percentage i think, if i remember right... something along the lines of that though.
