i have got a new canister filter and the inlet it has on it is no good there is enough room for my kuhli loaches / shrimp to get into i have tried socks etc over the inlet but it is preventing to much water flow has anyone tried to make there own before i need some ideas!!

us an appropriate size aqua clear foam over the intake

the sponge is coarse holed not fine, but it does need washed out when cleaning the tank, just cut a slit in it to make room for the intake, if the intake is a wide one i take them off and put the foam over the inlet pipe, instead.. have done this on my canisters and emperor 400 filter and smaller hob ones to keep fry and shrimp out

i was just thinking (dont know if it will work) but getting some garden hose about make it go all the way to the bottom of the tank seal the bottom with a plug and silicon and putting a few thousand 3/16 or smaller holes in it should suck in enough water as well as "****" in the tank

I took an old net, and cut the netting off of it, and covered the intake for my FX5. It kept the small shrimp from getting sucked into the filter, while still removing some of the larger debris, and not restricting the flow too much..

Of cours I did thin is the middle of the night, and now I have foam covering it.

On my shrimp tank, I took 'cut to size' filter media, and covered the intake..
it worked well... but got plugged up too often.. now I have the AC foam one it..

I use an old pair of pantyhose.
Cut out a 5 or 6 inch section of leg.
Tie a knot in one end.
Place over intake and rubber band in place.
I usually make sure my wife is not wearing them when I do this.

ok so i was playing around last night i think i came up with a good idea (well it seems to be working (GREAT) i actually have more water flow now than i did wit the original inlet...

i cut a section of garden hose long enough to go from the top of my tank to the bottom drilled a heap of about 3/16 holes all the way down, it plugged the bottom of the hose and put some fly screen mesh around it, it seems to be working very well as it is picking up dirt not only from the bottom of the tank but from the top also.

Power head sponges.

Cool man, sounds like a good idea! Might hafta remove and rinse screen off occasionally.
