Has anyone raised the Urophthalmus "Mayan" Cichlid before? Im just curios because I just bought one from Petco that looked stressed out in the tank with Red Jewels.
I have. Not as big or as pretty as a Festae. Fairly aggressive. Nice fish.

What foods are best for them? How big do they grow?

I've a friend who grew one to darn near 14"; he'd had the fish for 10 years. As for food, they'll eat pretty much anything...variety is the key.

I believe there are nearly a dozen subspecies and variantes of the Urophthalmus. I have heard of a Coatzalcoalcos variante that will reach 15". Perhaps this is the kind CichlidScenes friend had. I on the other hand have a 3 year old Urophthalmus (female I believe) that is no more than 8" total.

I just lucked up and got a six inch Urophthalmus from someone at a Petstore who just didnt want him.
The fish is beautiful. It has strong verticle stripes red fins and a speckled blue face.
The 1 inch one I have is doing fine and has a healthy appetite. They both love Hikari Gold pellets. THAt is all I am feeding them right now.
