I recently purchased a used 100g seaclear system 2 to start my first SW tank. The included seaclear protein skimmer is missing a few pieces. Before I get a replacement I was wondering if these are efficient or if it would be better to purchase a separate protein skimmer to keep below the tank. Anyone familiar with these setups? Advice on these systems seems few and far between. Thanks for any help.

Not a very good skimmer by all accounts, i tend to have these on par with Prizm skimmers.....(and thats bad)....What size is the actual tank its going on? as you only mention the size of the skimmer, and not the tank...Its always best to get a skimmer rated a little higher than your tank size...Some recomendations are Coralife super Skimmer, Octopus, Deltec, Aqua C ( obviously, some are better than others, mearly just suggestions there :) Just keeping myself water tight from haters ;) )) ....I suppose it all depends on your budget...

Thanks for the reply reefscape, I mentioned it's 100gal, kinda hidden in the first sentence. I'll take a look at some of those brands that you mentioned. I imagine they will be larger than the chamber provided in the seaclear for their proprietary skimmer, so I'll probably have to re-route out to the skimmer and back in to the filtration steps.

Here's an example of a similar tank, might better explain what I'm talking about:
