Betta cycling

We are currently 2.5 weeks into cycling our 5 gal tanks for our 2 bettas.
The Halfmoon is Fin, and the crowntail is Gil.
We think Gil has a little bit of fin rot, because 2 of his string fins looks like it got burned off and 2 other little strings are starting to curl.
Is this fin rot?
I keep on checking Fin and I'm scared that he might start too.
We bought the bettatalk 'Betta first aid Kit'...
We started using it on Gil, but stopped because we realized that it might impede the cycling process by killing the good bacterias...
And we have also noticed that our plants are dying...
We just switched to a flourescent bulb in hopes that will help...

of course not... we have two 5 gallon tanks..

If you are worried about interrupting your cycle and think the fish might be getting fin rot, the best thing you can do is water changes and keep the water as pristine and clean as possible. I don't really see any damage from the pictures but I guess just keep an eye on it.

As for the plants, how many watts do you have over the tanks? And are you putting any nutrients or fertilizers in the tank?
 
The middle tank with Gil the crowntail has blue stones
and the tank on the left with Fin the Halfmoon has pinkish stones.

Gil's tank is a little discolored from the meds that we put earlier...
We've stopped using the meds, but we dont know if we should do 100% water change or just continue with the 10% daily.
That is what I have been doing with Fin's water, thats why hers is a little clearer...
 
We just switched to 10 watts flourescent... it used to be a 15 watt halogen.
we are not using any fertilizers because we are worried it might interfere with the cycling or hurt our fish... :o(
 
Go ahead and use fertilizers, they shouldn't interrupt your cycle. I would try some flourish excel. The lighting should be fine. If anything you can bump it back up to the 15watts because its a taller tank. Sometimes plants will 'melt' a little as begin to acclimate to your tank.
