I was thinking of using Tahitian Moon Sand in one of my tanks with Panda Corys. Would that be ok? I have read mixed reviews on the web, some people say it is too sharp and could kill a cory. Or is it safer to stick with pool filter sand. I have never used the moon sand before, but think it would make a cool substrate.

i have used it and fine. not sure about killing it but it might be able to scratch the bottoms up. its use at your own risk.

The company that makes it says not to use it with bottom dwellers, that enough for me.

ok are you looking for sand just for sand or looking for the color?
if you want other black options get Seachem Flourite Black Sand or 3m colorquatz harder to find but $25 for 50 pounds. 3m is a little bigger then sand but it comes in two grades.

I switched to play sand after losing too many corys to missing barbels and the subsequent diseases that followed.
I loved the look but there is no sense in denying that having corys is more important to me than a sleek black substrate.

You're right. Think I will go with the pool filter sand. I think pool filter sand should be ok, if play sand is ok. I may eventually move to the 3M one, but that will probably be a while away.

If you visit their web site, they have a chart recommending what substrate of theirs to use each for.

Pool sand has a very similar shape to Moon sand, squarish grains. I've heard mixed results if it's ok with corys. I have whitish pool sand with kuhlis & corys, they're fine & have been for a couple years. But I have multicolored tan pool sand in a tank & all my habrosus corys have died over the last year. I don't know if it's a factor but I will probably change it. I didn't like the play sand I got but it's very variable.
I also have Eco-complete nice but $$$. I have flourite black sand & while it seems safe, it's too dusty in a low tank & $$$. I want to try 3M colorquartz next if I can find it. I've heard the website listing isn't updated. Still looking for the "perfect" substrate.
Eco-Complete is great! I have it 7 of my tanks!
I've used Moon Sand for many years with no problems at all for fish from cories to flounder, kuli loaches, hog suckers to elephantnose fishes. No problems at all. bigger fish seem to love to scoop it up and pump it through their gills. i seldom use anything else.
