Hey all,
First time with Africans. I'd like to start a Lake Tanganyika Biotope tank focused on either Brevis or Multis. Are there any other native fish that can live in a 12 gallon with them, or should it stay a species biotope? I heard over in GFW that the multis will form colonies that are fairly peaceful. Is this true, or will I have to continuously sell off young (granted, I could only have maybe 5 or 6 total anyways) any help would be appreciated

I think it might be best to stick with just the brevis or multis with just a 12g tank. If you had a 20g, you could sneak in a pair of a small Julidichromis species, like dickfeldi or ornatus.

You'll be able to have 10 or so multis before you need to sell any off, but that's not counting the smaller fry you'll have by then. A 12 gallon multi tank should be more than self supporting - you'll make enough with time to cover most of your fishie costs.

Plus - multis are cool. They are not, however, peaceful - they'll attack much larger fish in waves...which is cool to see as long as your not the other fish. Brevis, in contrast, are all show and not very aggressive.

St. Louis has an active fish club and I believe a branch of the ACA or MWCA. Check with them - they'll have them somewhere in the membership. Actually, I'd start with the club folks first...much cheaper than the LFS! Here's a link to the St. Louis Cichlid folks: http://midwestcichlid.com/phpBB2/index.php?page=12

Here's the St. Louis fish club (called MO Aquarium Society): http://www.missouriaquariumsociety.com/main.htm

I'd go with 4-6 multis. They're hard to sex, but with 4-6 you'll get some breeding going on.

No problem - I'm glad I could help. I really like multis - make sure you have sand or aragonite sand (to buffer) for them. THey love to digm, but have small mouths so need fine substrate. Only use a thin layer of sand - maybe 1/2 inch. They'll dig huge hills, terrirorial boundaries (if they colony splits into two distinct groups which can happen) - they're very cool fish.
