Is it really possibly to get "good" "used" tanks? I am relatively new to aquariums, but feel confident in my abilities. Am looking for another one or two and had looked on Craigslist to see what I could find. Thoughts on this approach please?

Thanks much!

As long as it is not leaking, you should take the aquarium. Sometimes it has hard water buildup, but CLR and a razor blade will take care of that. (As long as you rinse out the whole aquarium twice)

I've brought a couple of small tanks, and the current 90 off ebay before...they have all been superb...never had any issues of leaking...

I have never purchased a used tank but intend on doing so (I have not found one that would work for me).

I do not know where you live but in San Angelo garage sales are an excellent source (ie. a 50G with all the condiments for $25). Typically these sales are listed in the Thursday and Friday morning want adds of the local newspaper with a general description of the merchandise but no prices.

I anticipate being in Austin several times this fall for LongHorn's football games and have been watching the Austin Craigslist. A real deal occasionally comes up as either someone needs cash* or is moving and does not want to deal with the hassle of moving their tank.

I do not intend to pay over 20% of the cost of new retail price.

TR

*These are easy to spot as they start at 80% of the new retail price and very soon start dropping the price significantly as "the cork is not a bobbling".

Used tanks are perfectly fine, just be sure they hold water before handing over money. Some, are even available for free at times.

Many folks get disenchanted with the hobby and are trying to hold out for every penny they ever put into it and every bit of time and fish.

Others just want it gone. Stay away from those folks who want $400 for there "showroom" 29 gal set up and equipment that goes with it that is cheap.

I would have purchased used if the people in this area didn't over value everything they sell on craigslist. I'm still looking though.

all of my tanks are off craigslist, i just make sure they hold water first. my rule of thumb is about $1 per gallon for a used tank.
