for my new tank (29gal, just over 2wpg and DIY CO2 and ferts) which im in the research phase of at the moment im looking into different substrates and im leaning towards flourite black with a possible bed of peat moss underneath, so has anyone used flourite black?? on the seachem site it has the "concentration of nutrients" for each different type of flourite and i was wondering if it actually made a difference in plant growth? and would the texture be to sharp for my khuli and dojo loaches? i was also thinking of mixing another type of flourite with the black but if they ended up mixing it would just irritate me forever until i fixed it.

i've heard of using peat under something that is inert like regular sand. but don't hear of many people using it under fluorite. so yes i second the questions of why peat.

i also second the idea of the fluorite black sand. and washing it really well. also once done washing it lett it dry out in the sun supposedly this helps with cloudy water when you add it to the tank.

:| i dont know i dont need it... so i dont need it so i wont put it in lol
my only concern with the sand is having to stir it because it becomes anerobic

If youre going with fluorite, I wouldnt add peat under it ...

Also second the drying the fluorite out after you rinse it - should result in very minimal clouding if any at all.

Honestly I haven't stirred my sand beds in at least a year and I'm starting to think that whole worry about anaerobic pockets is nothing more than a bogey man. Like so many other things in fish keeping, my experiences have shown it as a myth.

The substrate choice isn't as important to plants as they like to make it out to be. As long as they can be planted and spread some roots, they do just fine. Fertilization, lighting, pruning, etc are far more important than the choice of substrate.

And this is coming from someone who used to agonize and heavily research planted tank substrates. I've tried so many things over the years and in the end I found that it's really the root tabs that give heavy root feeding plants the stuff they like.

:iagree: I never stir the sand in my tanks and I have never had a problem. I personally don't use root tabs anymore just dry ferts. I love sand, have never had any problems and would personally never go back to gravel.
