hi...
Would 2 400 watt MH and 2 110 watt vho attinics be too much lighting for a 90 g reef?
That would total 1200 watts of light.

yeah, i think it would be. i'd drop down to the 250 watt halides. that should be a better mix. what are you going to try and grow with that much light??

Exactly, What are you wanting to keep in this tank. You could go either way IMHO. If you are keeping clams, sps and other light loving orgs. then the set up you are thinking would be fine. One thing to remember, most 90g tanks are pretty deep so they do require a little extra light on the subject :D
With that much light, you are looking at around 11.3 watts of light per gallon.
Have you ever looked at a shallow reef? The light is much more intense then that even.

I have a 90gal and I only use one 400 wt. And it's does great..
