Would it be safe to feed my oscar some canned tuna or salmon that's packed in water? And what about house flies after I swat them? Are there any insects I should avoid feeding him? Anything else I should avoid (I'm not using feeder fish)? Thanks!!

I'm not sure about the canned fish, but if you want to feed them salmon and other fish, try Omega One cichlid pellets. The first ingredient is whole salmon. I have heard Omega One is the only fish food with no fish meal in it, & it says on the can "made only with fresh seafood". My oscars go nuts over the pellets. They also make flakes. As far as the live food goes, I have tried crickets from the bait & tackle, and they are too much trouble for me. The oscars weren't very interested, and if something doesn't eat them quickly, they will find a hole and get out of the tank. Flies might be okay. Try earthworms. If you want to feed them feeder fish, try rosy red minnows, but quarantine them for a couple of weeks before putting them in the oscar tank. There is nothing like watching an oscar (or Jack Dempsey in my situation) go after live prey. Mine seem to thrive on it.
