View Full Version : Ok, what are my Sevs doing?

So a few weeks ago, I had my RD/Midas fish either fighting or mating....still not sure which they were doing, I do know they are not doing it now. Anyway yesterday after a WC in my 55g....I go in the room and my Sevs are lip locked, literally. They did this like 5 times, the FM swam over to the male and they would lock lips and hold it for like 15-20sec...then she would let go swim off and come back and do it again, I hadn't seen them do this before and I've never seen them act aggressive?

They will do that before spawning, although I would think it pretty unlikely to get that far with the given tankmates....assuming they are in the 150 also.

NO....they are not in the 150...they are in a 55, although the tankmates most likely would eat any eggs or anything else. They have 1 FM (growing for the 150), 1 blue Gourami, 3 Paradise fish, 1 poly, and a Angel. I just wanted to be sure they weren't trying to hurt one another.

Well, its possible, sometimes the male can get a little "overexuberant" and thrash the female trying to get her in the mood, so just keep an eye on them.

Hmm, well if there was anyway I could get the 70 set up soon enough I could use it...but at the time, I'm not sure what I'd use...I just have a 10g qt open at the moment (I know with my big boys I should have another...but I don't).

LMAO!! Yeah, I could say I need it cause I'm going to start breeding my Sevs and if I do that I could make money...right, how could I get in trouble if I'm making money!!!:headbang2:

Aggression, they are setting the pecking order in the tank. Dont worry its normal. If one of them gets really beat up seperate him. My severums were at it 3 days back for about 2 hours. Then it was lip locking with a yellow lab for a few minutes. Almost all cichlids do this to setup the pecking order in the tank. my green terrors seem to be the referee here:)

Well, when a Mommy Sev and a Daddy Sev love each other, sometimes.... :perv:
And then afterwards they smoke cigarettes and watch Leno.

The difference is your pic is of two males ;) And Lady G's is of a male and a female in my opinion ;)
I agree with Sploke ;) They are courting and testing.. You may likely have eggs some day ;)

Awwwwww, that would be nice.....except the tank mates may eat them. CRAP...I need to get busy on that stand so I can move em into the 70g!! Of course that is going to mess up my AC tank plans yet again:headshake2:

mine did that off and on for 3 days. i put them in a 150g and they started back at it .then i woke up to eggs everywhere the next day. so get a emergency tank ready or tank divider cuz its bound to happen. good luck to you and your beautiful fish.

Sevs are my new favorite and i am searching at all LFS here to get a pair of golden sevs after seeing ladyG's pair.

Awwww, I had to have my LFS order them for me. They didn't carry them, I did have to place a deposit for them to order for me...but they got them and was so worth it. So if you have a favorite LFS, just ask them if they can order something you are looking for. They may be able to :)
Its just nature's way of making sure that the strongest survive. Male and female will lip lock to test each other's strength to make sure that they pass on the best of each other's genes. This is why sometimes male and female don't spawn, they decide after a few of these testing sessions that one or the other just isn't the best mate for them.
My sevs liplock from time to time.:rolleyes: They already spawned once and weren't happy with the loaches.:grinyes:
