I prewashed my pool filter sand, then put it in the tank then filled the tank with water. The tank at first was really cloudy, but now is only slightly cloudy, but it's still pretty foggy. I was wondering if this will eventually settle or should I start doing water changes. I remember from school that some particles when they get to a certain size, they're classified as colloids and are a stable suspension. Classroom theory doesn't always predict the practical, so I thought I'd ask. Oh, and It's a 30 gallon, which I used to think, before lurking in this forum, is huge. Apparently it's pretty small

The pool filter sand should settle fairly quickly. I have it in my one tank. I rinsed it pretty well before adding it and actually didn't have an issue with it being cloudy afterwards at all. I would at any rate do some water changes to get the finer of the particle out without disturbing more of the substrate. That should help alot. What brand filter sand did you use?

Give it a bit to settle..If in say, 3 hours it isn't starting looking better, do a water change. When I put pool filter sand in mine, there were some particles that actually stayed on top of the water, I used a paper towel to skim the surface and remove them.

If everything else fails, add a very fine sponge to the intake of everything that pumps water in your tank. (Filters, powerheads, pumps etc.)
Super easy to root them but super easy for a clumsy arse snail to un root them too! lol
