Picked up this new addition about a week ago. In the store he was clean and showed no outer symptoms of anything. When temp acclimating him I noticed his eye poped out of socket. I have yet to see him eat, but assume at this point he must be eating something.

If he looks and acts fine, should I put him through the stress of catching(assuming I can) and treating him. Can this possibly go away on it's own? I do keep my water pristine to give all my salty buddies the best possible chance to fight off any potential bugs. Any suggestions are very much appreciated!

55 gallon reef
4 small fish
nitrates 0, phos 0,ammonia 0, trites 0, Ph at 8.2, salinity at 1.025, calc at 460, temp between 78 and 80

hmm

i would go buy A big bottle of melafix and treat the whole tank sometimes cathcing only causes more trauma and melafish can only help and is safe to all fish and inverts and yes we are here:)

Thanks for responding, although I'm trying my best to keep all chemicals out of my display. I agree, with catching, it usually stresses them just enough to make treating a long shot at best. Also, congrats on the progress of your tank, it's looking great!

What other fish do you have? It could have been caused by injury. My maroon clown had popeye due to a fight with my tang. I just made sure the water changes were done on time and kept her well fed, it soon disappeared.

Mine happened in the bag on the way home from my lfs. I carefully examined him prior to purchase, and immediatly noticed it while acclimating him. I think my obsession with perfect water params is the only thing keeping him active and eating. I am a bit suprised to see it still popped out quite a bit, but it has become clear and seems to be working judging from his behavior. I will try some new foods to hopefully boost his ablilty to fight it. Thanks Cat!

Back when i worked at a LFS, a common treatment we used for popeye was a formalin dip.

Basically, we took a gallon of tank water, and the recommended amount of formalin (says on the container) per gallon... dropped in an airstone for aeration , and left the fish in there for roughly 40-45 minutes... i can't tell you scientifically what this did for the fish, although i can tell you that the formalin in general tended to help a lot of the fish in the store, it was used on a daily basis...

of course we lost some fish, but thats the nature of a store to some extent as well.

Thanks, if he takes any turn for the worst I'll give it a shot. Fortunatly I have some on-hand through mail order. It's a pain when the state outlaws one of the few chemicals I have used with success.

Almost home! With the good diet and precision water parameters, my blue buddy is making it on his own. I love when things get better naturally. Early on I thought I'd never reach the ability to dial things in the way I have. My biggist allie has been this forum and all the countless links I've been directed to. Again, thanks to all who contribute to this site.
