What Else do I need? (Besides Plants and Light)

SO my new hood is in the mail and my plants will be coming some time next week.

I'm going out tomorrow to get a back of Schultz (really hope walmart has it :eek3:) - figure I'll use an inch or 2 of this under an inch of 2 of gravel (3 inches of sub in total)

What else do I need? Fert tabs or liquid fert (heard both of these mentioned around the forum)?

I'm going for a medium light tank. Don't really want to deal with CO2 system, so if there is something I need to get (something for the water or something) since I won't be using said CO2 system then I'll pick that up too.

thanks :grinyes:

what size tank and what lights are you getting (migh have missed it if you had it posted) for fertz if it's low tech i'd say get fert tabs to put in the substrate.. and alternative to CO2 is Seachems excell but is expensive and thus not usually practical for bigger tanks, also vals don't like it (thay go all melty)

15 gallon tank. putting CF's into an incandescent hood to get 2ishwpg

My LFS didn't have any dry ferts. I got something called Seachem's Flourish. Will this stuff work? (I know you said something about Seachem's Excel, but they didn't have that).

For a 15gal how often should I use this stuff (it says 5ml of every 60 gallons, 1-2x per week, so it'd be like 1.25ml for me I guess) - I tend not to trust the instructions since, well, they're also trying to sell more of the stuff:silly:

flourish is a liquid firt and works well lots of people use it but it can becomes expensive on bigger tanks. with a 15 gallon i think you should be fine with that. do follow there instructions because thay accurate. and with that lighting the plant will want it. what is the exact wattig of your bulbs. if you get past 2wpg then i would say you should at least invest in a DIY CO2 reactor (yeast sugur mix)

I bought some 20 watt CF's. wanted to get 15s but they didn't have any.

Would I be able to use the Excel stuff in place of the DIY CO2 (I don't have much space at school).

should be ablt to it's a basically liquid carbon of some sort (not sure of the actually compounds) and with that size tank it should be manigable.

by the way how big are your rooms at school? i assume this is college. to get better spaced in dorms alwys figure out a way to loft you bed it adds alot of floor space

You can get fine healthy plant growth without any kind of added CO2; that stuff's just for people who want absolute jungles in their tanks. Also be aware that a 20W CFL is not equivalent to a 20W traditional fluorescent; it gives off considerably less usable light. So don't worry, you have not yet ventured into high-light high-tech territory.

that's what I've heard.

as for the room thing...believe me we maximize space (several different trials out it...sigh...so tiring). however, next year I'm going to be in an apartment so my actual bedroom where I keep the tank is kinda small. Tank is going on top of my dresser (only sturdy thing in the room), so I don't want to take up more space than absolutely necessary
