View Full Version : Carbon Filter in New Eheim Canister

I read the instructions that state you should leave the carbon filter in a newly installed filter for two weeks, then remove it. However, I am concerned that it will be extracting the nutrients the plants need. I have a heavily planted tank, so I am thinking of removing it after 2 or 3 days instead of two weeks. Any thoughts?
you can just leave it in there and forget about it. From personal experience im not sure how accurate the carbon statement is.. Comparing results of with and without carbon, the plant growth is the same in both situations..

I've seen posters on planted-tank sites swear up and down that carbon removes some nutrients, but nothing that I'd consider "scientific." :read:
FWIW: Purigen is an economical substitute for carbon and is guaranteed not to remove nutrients. :idea:

I tried it in the Betta Palace, but the "portion" it comes in was way too big for the AC 20 filter, and I discovered, after cutting open the bag :wall:, that I didn't have bags with a fine enough mesh to hold it. So I'm saving it for the 40 I'm buying at the end of summer.

lol so since you cut open the bag, get some of the purigen out and then close the bag somehow and use it in the AC20.. lol purigen pimp not!! there was a seller on classified with a huge ton of it. dozen of 100ml and a few larger ones. Thats pimp lol
