Hello all,

There seems to be a white puff ball thing on the dorsal fin on my pictus cat? Is this a fungus? Dont have a pic, but can get one if needed.

We need the pic. What are your water parameters? Size of tank? Tankmates? Has the fish been injured before? Fungus is a secondary infection for wounds left untreated.

is it the only pictus in the tank? if you have more than one, they might have been fighting each other.

i have had my pictus cat for three years now, and i think they do better by themselves - i had them in a pair first off, but they kept on fighting until one died so maybe yours got injured that way? also they are extremely prone to ich, finrot etc because they are scaleless so ensure you have very clean water. esha (the one for finrot and fungus) is a good med to use because it doesn't affect sensitive fish like pictus cats.

We need some pics to determine the diesase. Sounds like fin rot but I'm not sure.

It kind of hard to see but i think I see fin rot. Do water changes, turn the temp up and add kosher salt. You could also add melafix to heal.

well...i don't know if it's becoz he was swimming too fast but that doesn't look like finrot to me...is it woolly growths? i mean when my pictus had finrot his fins were just getting really ragged and kind of dark grey in colour?! but yours looks like it actually has something growing on his fin. maybe you should just use a med for finrot and fungus (to be on the safe side) but i don't think you should medicate without being exactly sure what it is.

Yes it looks like a fuzzy white cotton ball growing on his fin.

use a med that is both finrot and fungus, like i said before eSHa is a good medication.

Well it seems that continued water changes took care of the problem. I had moved dude to a hospital tank, went to get some meds, then poof, overnite the puffball thingy went away. So thanks for all the help everybody it really does help.
