Hi,

I was thinking of getting more into this whole aquarium deal again, however, there is something that has bothered me about having it. On the top of my tank, I have been getting a brown (or white), flaky buildup that seems of some sort of crystalized structure. I was curious if any of you knew what it was and how to dispose of it. It is a freshwater ~30 gal tank.

Recently, I tried to turn my tank light on, and the button caved in. Puzzled, I opened the top of it and tried to push it back out (thinking whatever sealed it in place gave way). What actually had happened is the plastic itself had corroded, or rotted, or deteriorated in some way. It was just falling apart as if it were meant to. Do you think these 2 problems are linked? Would this buildup of odd junk cause the deterioration of my tank light button?

Here are some pictures of the buildup:

Yah i have an Idea dump, it their cheap and thats making me throw chunks.....:yuck::irked::yuck::irked::irked::nilly:

The buildup is calcium from hard water; just scrape it off. More resistant stuff can be taken off with lemon juice or vinegar.

Those rubber button covers just deteriorate over time, especially if exposed to strong light. It has nothing to do with your hard water.

I was thinking hardwater, as well. I have it. Have you ever notice that if you boil water for a long time you end up with white sediment in the bottom of the pot? That is lime from hard water. It kills my coffee pots, dishwashers, etc. I have a water softener but I don't want to run it because it will change up my water that my fish are accustomed to...
I have also noticed that my tanks with undergravel filters get a layer of sedement flakes on the plants, gravel. I think the constant bubbling of the water iin the air tube causes the lime to separate out.

:welcome:Oh, and WELCOME!!!

Are there replacement parts that I can get for the button part of my hood, or will I be required to buy a new hood?

And thanks haha.

I get that build up also. I scrub it in the bathtub, then douse with vinegar, scrub again then rinse really good.
