Out of curiosity - when it comes to breeding bettas - can you predict the colours of the fry depending on the colours of the "parents" ? I think what i am trying to say is - if you want more beautiful red ones like him - do you have to pair him with a certain colour female to have better chances of having that result.
Yes i know i sound like an idiot..... :duh:
Oh and great pictures and interesting idea. I cant wait to see more.

HannysPapa: Yes, if you breed two to produce what you want..Perferrably brother and sister...Chances are I will get a 100 percent red babies, but there is no telling what can happen if a recessive gene kicks in...May get a few oddballs...
Can definitely see hints of the verticle striping on her in that pic of her near the plants. Good luck....hope they succeed !
Now, was this the original male....or a completely different pair ?

Hedging one's bets is always the best course of action. Wonderful pics. I feel bad for the first guy though, he really had the crap kicked out of him. oh well, maybe next time for him.
Yeah, poor fella, he got it so bad he looks like a girl now ! His poor fins will probably never be the same...
One thing to consider when deciding to breed your male betta just for fun.....if he's got gorgeous fins...he may no longer after the process....

Awww man. I wanted to see baby betta's!! lol. I really think this is fascinating. How long will it take to condition them up again? You have done an awesome job with the pictures. I can't wait to see the continuing saga of betta breeding....."As the Spawn Turns"
Thank you so much for sharing with us.

I agree with Harlock..betta peep show...
Very interesting. Do you have any other colors? On my desk at work I have a nice red male betta.

If I were a female betta, I'd think he was rather a hottie... :girl:

Nursie, he is so EXQUISITE I have yet to capture his incredible colour...His vigor is without measure, second only to his beauty...The female is equally as lovely and some fine stock bred by a friend of mine. A good pair from this line will go for $100

Tell me about it!...He is down there guarding them like a junk yard dog...He was so cute and protective...He was actually shoving her "prone" body out of the nest with his nose so he could tend to the eggs...Mama is resting comfortably and he is fretting like mad with the eggs....GIMME SOME WRIGGLERS!

How do you get mosquito larva? I have wanted to try it, but I have read the only way to get it is to have a bucket outside, and that only works in the summer.
TheMightyQueenPixie
11-06-2005, 2:43 PM
I buy it frozen at the LFS...Also known as "glass worms"...I used to just collect it outdside, however with pollution and god knows what else taking up residence in the bucket, it gave it up...MUCH easier to keep the frozen ones too...
They have also made it illegal to have "standing water" in Ontario..West Nile Virus is becoming a problem and skeeters are carrying it...Better to be safe then sorry.
Beautiful couple there MQ ! Can't wait to see how the the little ones turn out !

You mention selling the offspring in pairs... Why is this done? Is it possible to buy just single fish from breeders, or does one always have to buy in pairs?
TheMightyQueenPixie
11-08-2005, 2:58 AM
Hi Mandi, Yes they are sold singly also...Ideally breeders want brother/sister pairs from a spawn to continue improving a line. Starting with unrealted fish can take years of breeding to get the results that you want.
P.S. I love your avatar!

how likely are problems from breeding siblings? are fish much less likely to get deformities down the line or is it a matter of ruthlessly culling any fry with visible problems?

Thanks. ^_^
And thanks for answering the question, too, I'd always wondered about that.

Usually you can line breed for about 6 generations before they start being born with banjo shaped fins :) Once that starts to happen you have to outcross to an unrelated fish and start over...

How are your fry doing Mighty Queen??? Inquiring minds want to know?? LOL
Are they big enough yet to show up in a picture? This really is a fun thread to follow.

Ill try and catch one on film tomorrow...Fruit flies would like like giants next to these guys...Not as big of a spawn as I had enticipated...I think Daddy got a little over-zealous with the fry gargling...He is one sad looking guy the past few days...Blew himself a big nest and watches it constantly for fry...Atleast I know he is a good dad...raising eggs without one is nearly impossible...He may come in handy in the future for being a "surrogate Daddy" Some males can be substituted to raise anothers eggs if the paternal father is an egg eater...Did I mention that they never cease to amaze me??? :)

Awsome!!!! Those are some pretty good pics, I know how hard they are to take pics of!!!
TheMightyQueenPixie

To put it into perspective, that "white strip" down the side of the first pic is a piece of 5/8" rigid insulation...Looks enormous next to the little guy..

Can we all give a collective "AAAwwwww!!!" So darn cute!
Thanks Mighty Queen. I had no ideal they are THAT tiny. Amazing!
I think you did a fine job taking their pics..we can see them and as tiny as they seem that's a miracle! LOL

How goes the fry Mighty Queen??? I was talking to a kid who works at the lfs and he is just getting in to breeding betta's. He bought his first breeding pair and has converted his basement over into a betta barracks. I thought of you of course! LOL
How fast do the fry grow? Do they show any color at the age they are now? Just curious.
Marala
12-13-2005, 7:01 PM
Are they always white when they are that age? Does it depend on their parents color type?
TheMightyQueenPixie
12-13-2005, 9:22 PM
All Betta fry are clearish and sort of a non-descript color when they are young...Sort of like baby guppys or platys...I should start to see some colour by New Years (i hope)...This is a new line for me, so im not sure what to expect :)

They look like some sort of tetras now :D
TheMightyQueenPixie

Primetime- They really do dont they? I think they look like Platy fry, but it takes a while for them to be recognised as a Betta...

   Vicious little buggers aren't they???
How many are left??? Man all that work and the big guys go and eat your profit. No way would I have the stomach for the "betta breeding business".
I shall post some new pics in the morning...The 2 largest fry have decided to eat their smaller sibs :(...Soooooo, it is one puny spawn...The are currently in segregation and probably will never go back into the tank without a divider now :( Ahhh, the painful jarring process...They are barely over 1/2" and are already showing the sterotypical Betta agression...It doesnt take them long to go from helpless fry to "warrior"...
on a lighter note, my black masked blues did the "deal"...A nice big spawn that I have high hopes for...

Soooo cute! I like the one with stripes.
TheMightyQueenPixie
02-15-2006, 12:15 PM
Normally she shouldnt have those stripes...The are "fear stripes"...When Bettas get agitated or afraid they will do that...Those stripes completely dissapear when she is calm...

so pixie got any other spawns on the go?
TheMightyQueenPixie
02-22-2006, 9:01 PM
Yeah, I have two others growing out at the moment...Offspring from two Royal blues and a royal blue/turq marb. butterfly... SHould be an interesting bunch... My guys and girls have not been co-coperating much lately...I would like ot have two more spawns atleast in the next month... There is NOTHING more frustrating then breeding Bettas lol

wow, I've just read through this whole thread, and I'm thouroughly impressed. There is a lot of information about breeding bettas, but often there are no pictures, to help show the true size of the fry, or the different stages of development.
Please keep this up, I really do enjoy reading it! :)

The Betta experts appear to be in here ...Will a betta build his bubble nest underneath a pringles lid? Also how big of a nest is big enough? Reason asking I've doe the styrofoam cup thing with success, but I'm a fish nerd and I want to try a pringles lid lol. I live life on the edge so watch out!! :coffee2:
Nice system MQ ! I may someday try breeding bettas again...if I ever do I'll give that setup some thought ! :thm:
TheMightyQueenPixie
06-26-2006, 10:36 PM
It would cost almost noting to build in the US... Most conventional systems I have seen are around 400 bones... It aint perfect and sometimes a bit akward, but for half price illl deal with it :P
NICE SDTs you have there MQ !
They look great ! Are these the spawn from your copper pair ?
