There seems to be a dearth of books on FW snails, but that might be because I don't know where to look and for what I am looking...can anyone give me the names of some good books on FW snails? (The broad spectrum of FW inverts is fine, as long as it has lots of good snail info.)

The Apple Snail site is a bit more authoritative, but not vetted. It has quite a lot of very good info on other snails:

Ditto another from the UK:

I know of only one book on snails and aquaria (and that is a bit of stretch): Apple Snails in the Aquarium, by Dr. Gloria Perera, Jerry G. Walls, TFH, 1996, TS-260. Decent info on some other snails there, not just Apples.

I have that apple snail book and it has sections on lots of other snail species as well. The photos are very nice. It's the ONLY book I could find on snails when I looked, so if you find anything else let me know. I searched pretty extensively for a bit because I think they are neat (and my pomacea used to breed for me, I raised quite a few of the babies from that). I also like the first website RTR mentioned, I learned a lot there. Will have to check out the other two.

I'll go ahead and look at those websites! :)

The book might have to wait, but I'll see that it finds its way to my Christmas list, if nothing else...I think that it would be neat to get some FW invert cultures going.

If your local second-hand bookstore keeps lists of book wanted, try for The Encyclopedia of Live Foods, by Charles O. Masters, TFH, 1975, ISBN #0-87666-093-6. Long out of print and $$$ from used aquarium booksellers or e-bay, as folks want copies for history as much as the info. But it covers everything from green water thru daphnia to snails to insects to some vertebrates. Breeding and rearing = how to keep, right?

The Encyclopedia of Live Foods is fantabulous! Sometimes you can luck out by trolling around book shops too. My copy was only $12.00 and worth every penny. It's got tons of info :) I'll browse through the university library here and see if I come up with anything else, amazing what you can find there....
