After taking some time to look at various AGA aquascaping contest entries from the last few years, I have noticed that Karen Randall's often negative comments almost consistently contrast with my opinions of what makes the entries pleasing or displeasing to me. Now I really want to see what this supposed expert does with her own tanks but I can't seem to find any examples. Care to help?

And that is exactly why I will never participate in anything aquarium related that is a contest- wont enter, wont vote. This holds for the simplest site OTM to the AGA annual. There is only one person who must like how a tank looks- and that is the owner of the tank.

However, there is another side to this coin. Over the years I have learned a fair amount from reading some of Karen's articles.

She has some good ideas. But only about technical things. Seemed like with every tank I looked at, the very thing I liked about the tank would be the first thing she criticized. Not to mention I found some of her comments just plain ridiculous - like on one tank there were albino fish and she felt it necessary to include her dislike of albino fish in the comment; as though that were somehow relevant to the objective critique of a piece of art.

My hat is in with yours TTA. On a side I have to add that one can learn a lot about what you find pleasing from these contests and incorporate that into your own tank. Also these guys likely have gobs of plant growout tanks at their disposal to plant up a tank for pictures at a moments notice. Something I've been thinking about just to make starting up a new tank that much easier and less expensive.

PS: You don't think she earned a spot with AGA as an editor?
