View Full Version : New fish tank questions!!
Hi everyone, i just want some advice about which tank to get as i've decided to replace my corner tank (which isn't really in a good place in the room to see it properly) i've looked at loads of fish tanks and i can't decide which to get, the first option is the aqua one 620 which holds 90 litres (about what the tank i have holds now) but i'm not sure what the filter is like on these as it's built into the hood but i like the idea as i don't need to put my hand in the tank to do the filter! The secound option is to buy just the tank and lid as seperates but i've been told by the shop a complete setup would be better!! but doing it this way i would get more money to buy plants etc.. this way i can get a 24x15x12inch tank or a 30x15x12inch for less than the aqua one! and the 30inch is longer and not a cube shape!! but i'm not sure if my pearl gouramis need a deeper tank than this!! any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

If you are going to plant, you need to think about lighting. If their hood comes with a useless light, I wouldn't get it.

The filters, heaters and lights they put with complete setups are generaly not adequate for the size tank they come with. I find it a lot more rewarding to buy just the tank (hood and stand as well if you don't want to DIY them) and kit it out with the equipmet that i want.

I also do my set ups with individual parts. I feel you get better quality than the stuff that is usually provided in the kits. Also many hood filters are poor in my opinion.

Yes ^^^^^^, I have never purchased a kit set up, the equipment that comes with them is usually the bare minimums at best, but can be used in conjunction with higher quality parts.........:)

if you are replacing your corner tank, you can use the filter from that and the heater, this will help with your cycle.
Thanks for the advice the lights in the aqua one 620 are 2 18w pl lamps! if i buy just the tank and hood i'll put in a single tube i'd have liked a twin lighting unit but so far i've only seen hoods that will only take one tube. The heater in the corner tank will go in the new tank but i'll need to replace the fluval 3 plus filter i have as it's so slow and it is struggling to work properly! my main problem once i've sorted out which tank to get which might be the 30x15x12inch (if i don't change my mind again!!!) will be which colour gravel to get which will be either natural gravel or gray gravel!! and finally how would i cycle the tank with the filter/heater i have now as i've got pearl gouramis that will move into the new tank once its ready!!

I have a 75 gallon marine tank. Its not new, but I didn't really know where to post this question.
I need a hood for it and i can't find one anywhere for a 75 gallon one. My tank has a bar across the top of it running from the front to the back. I was thinking of getting a 55 gallon hood and just laying glass across the back parts that would not be covered up by the hood.
So does anyone know where I could get a hood for a 75 gallon tank.

Tessr, it appears you are on a budget but you have fish that will grow to quite a large size so the bigger tank the better. The above posters are right when they say the all in one set-ups are barely adequate. The big problem with those is they are hard to upgrade when everything is built in.
Have you thought of buying second hand. You can find some great bargains on Craigslist or ebay. You can find tanks for much less than retail, often with filters thrown in. You could probably get a 55 gallon for the price of the Aquaone 620. Take your time and find one you really like.
Regarding buying in bits and pieces - it can be expensive but you will end up with a far superior product. Ensure when you buy lights to get at least a double tube unit, otherwise keeping plants alive will be a nightmare. Your filter is very important. Eheim Classic cannisters are my reccomendation. Go one size up from what Eheim reccomends, and you will have superb filtration.
Regarding using your old filter for your new tank. By all means. You can cycle it instantly by transferring everything in the old tank to the new tank. That means EVERYTHING. The gravel, the fish, the heater, the filter, the media, the ornaments, the rocks. All these things have nitrifying bacteria on them. The old filter on the new tank will support the same bioload as it did in the old tank. The extra water will not be an issue.

Peter, I'd suggest the LFS could put you on to the person who builds their hoods and stands and they can build you one to fit.
