Hello. Have been adding new fish and wonder if I have overstocked.
The list is on my signature line. I do have a lot of artificial plants, 1 large ship, 1 large rock formation from bottom to top and a large log in the 70G.
Not too much in the 20G and 5G.
The nitrate is 15 the nitrite and amonia 0ppm and the PH is 7.4 in all the tanks
Temp is 77-78.
I do have to 5 male and 2 female platys I heard this is not good. In a 70G do I still need more females?
The red tail shark is hiding most of the time but when he does come out he is quite a bully. I posted before and it was suggested I get rid of him. In a 70G tank is he still going to be a problem?
There are some nips on the platys tail? Any ideas who this could be?
Sorry lots of questions. I also wanted to get otos as you all have suggested
but I have no real plants and the fish store is saying that the otos need them?
Thanks for any info you can give

I don't keep your fish but I'd say your 70 gallon is not even close to being overstocked by, a country mile.

I agree i don't think your tank is overstocked.

Thanks, with that happy outcome should I put 4 of the Danio from the 20 to the 70G.
I would like to empty the quarantine tank so I can get more. Can the cory's and the guppies go into the 20G?

IMO you could put all the danios in the 70g and then all the cories and guppys in the 20g this shouldn't cause any problems.

The danio's have only been in the 20G for 1 week is it too soon to transfer them to
the 70G. They seem fine.

the recommended ration of m:f is 1:2 for platies. adding that many females would give you 15 platies in all. you may want to bring down your number of males to 3 and then still bring up your females to 6.

I guess I could put some in the 20G and that way there would not be as many in the 70G

Just got back with my niece after getting 3 female Platys to eventually go in the
70G.
I changed my signature to show what I have now in the tanks. I moved the 4 guppies and 2 panda cory from QT to 20G. Moved 3 of the to many male platys to the 20G from 70G. Took 3 of the zebra danio and moved them to the 70G
Whew. Could not have got this far without the help. Now I'm loving the color of the platys and hope to have some small fry eventually. Can I have anymore in my 70G after the 3F Platys go in? Any nice looking fish to bring out some more color. Or should I just leave it alone for now?

With all those platys you are sure to get more naturally.

To be honest you could probably put every fish you have into the 70 if you've got the filtration and do water changes on a semi-regular basis.

JPappy that sure makes sense and if I'm no good at fry parenting I'll have to do something else. lol

I'm not sure if I do have enough. I have an AquaClear 70. It does a fine job.
Do you think it could handle that many fish?

Most minimum requirements for HOBs or any filter for that matter really don't cut it. I would actually suggest adding another, smaller-rated filter to compliment the one you have. Two filters are better than one without a doubt.

I think splitting the stock between two tanks makes more sense given the fish you have. That many schools in one one tank would be cluttered IMO.

With hob's I've always doubled what they can handle, that's why I've got the amount on my tank now that I do

Yeah i agree with the above, add another filter, even another AC70. And then you still would have more run to stock, say another 6 platies or tetras.

I have 4 otos and all my plants are artificial. They are happy and healthy. If your tank is new, just wait to add them until you have some algae growth.

Another filter is a great idea. These way I will have enough beneficial media if needed.
The aquarium is only about 5-6 months old. I better hold off for a bit with the otos but I sure would love to have them.
I'm not sure what hobs mean. What is it short for?

There's plenty of room in the 70 gallon still. Everything in there except the shark is a peaceful community fish. So there are lots of choices IF you re-home the shark. It will cause problems.

Anyway, you might consider a pair of dwarf sunset gouramies, pearl gouramis, moonlight gouramis, rainbowfish, non-nippy tetras, a betta (instead of not additional to gouramies), angelfish, khuli loaches.

No need to feel silly - I still can't figure out where the term "bump" came from (when something bad happens) and that is used here all the time:)

I'm surprised the red-tail is giving you any issues. Normally they're only aggressive to those of their own species. I have two in my planted 55 and they don't harass anyone but each other. Of course I found out about their temperament after buying them.

if want u can add. 2 ram cichlids. some apisto grammaz. ( those are dwarfs ) or if not those then add, 3 frogs of ur choice up the number of corys to 6 each. a few dwarf groumies up the number of tetras to 12. and add some shrimps.

First of all Thanks everyone,
Now I'm soooo excited my 3 new female platys in my quarantine tank had babies.
(not sure which one they all seemed the same size to me) Yes a newbie I sure am. YEAH. Well I only found out because one of the ladies ate a baby in front of my eyes. I quickly flew into action and got the 4 remaining out and into a net. (Thankfully I was prepared thanks to this site and got a birth net just in case)
Wish me luck on my new grandfishes.
Also thanks for all your suggestions on any new additions. I'll do some research and find out what suits my fancy.
I did go out and buy a new filter for the 70G and the 20G just to help with the load and to make sure there is always a back up.
I'm a little sad as I have to go away for the night tomorrow so I'll miss my new additions.
I am going to keep the red tail for a bit and watch to see what he does. If he does cause any problems I have a place that will take him. I hate to give up on him yet. But I do want the tank to be a happy place.
Thanks agian

By numbers and size - no its not overtsocked, but by level location (upper, middle, lower) I would say its an unbalanced aquarium. You need some bottom level fish and some upper level fish to balance it out.

Bupp

Yes Derringer I see what you mean Most of them are in the middle. The zebra are everywhere. I was only worried to put any bottom feeders in because of the red tail. I will watch for this in my choices. Tks

Oh, Tina, I am SO cracking up. I have had livebearers for years and I still get all excited when babies come. I usually keep the males and females in seperate tanks until I want more babies. Sometimes I just rescue a few and let the others get eaten, other times I have a whole mess of babies growing out in an additional tank:)

Your tank is not overstocked!

Well I'm happy to say the grandfishes are doing great I put them in the 20G because unfortunately 3 platys have died in the quarantine tank. Thank goodness I read about the quarantine tanks on this site and was able to start treating them. I still have 2 in the quarantine tank and hope to move them out soon.
bgreen good idea about keeping the sexes separate and to put them together only when I need too.
Still checking out the suggestions on the next fish I get for the 70G.
