Ok I feel guilty and very upset right now. I have 2 trilineatus cories and wanted to add more to my 36g. The LFS only had pepperred cories so I bought 3 they seemed fine no white spots no sores nothing active swimming. The next morning I found 2 dead and one with what looked like blood coming out of its mouth. My parameters are fine 0 ammonia 0 nitrite 0 nitrate ph 6.0.
Yes I freaked out:eek:. I immediately got them out of the tank and returned them to LFS they were in the tank less than 24 hrs. LFS salesperson told me they had experienced some problems with the recent fish stock they ordered and the pepperred cories were part of that stock this LFS usually has great fish and this is the first time I have had a problem with their stock. Yesterday one of my white clouds died his belly was swollen and he was pineconed this happenned out of the blue. I check my fish daily and didn't notice this until the day before.
Now this morning my trilineatus cories have white spots on them mostly on its head I noticed a couple on there body and ontop of dorsal tail. They are out of my 36g and in my QT. Now here is the question I am not sure if this is ich or just a parasite. The other fish in my 36g are fine I am going to do a pwc tonight with gravel vac on that tank. I have Maracyn and Maracyn 2 in the house. Is this ok to use on cories? I also have aquarisol which is better for cories? I have not added salt to the QT as I know cories do not tolerate salt well.
I am kicking myself right now:wall: .I just hope the rest of my fish don't get whatever this is. I need help asap I just checked on the cories in QT and they are swimming around active please tell me what to do I am not good at diagnosing disease and I really want to save these cories. Luckily my petstore gives credit for any fish that do not do well they give you 48hrs with new fish and I got a receipt to replace the ones that died once I get whatever this is under control. I am going to keep a very close watch on my other fish in the 36g tank for any problems. I will try to post a pic the white spots are kind of hard to see. Thanks for any help you can give.

Thus the need to quarantine ALL fish before adding to your main tanks! Just because you don't see it doesn't mean it's not there. If it is ich or another parasite I'd use Kordon rid-ich. I've used it with cories, I've also used salt with cories but I now use Rid-ich and prefer it. You'll still need to treat the whole tank as the carriers were in there and likely infected the tank. Good luck!!

When I posted the parameters of my 36g I made a mistake nitrates are 10-20 not 0. I went to my LFS yesterday and one of the other salespeople that knows alot about fish told me to do a pwc and good gravel vac on my 36g which it was due to have this weekend anyway. I keep the temp at 80 degrees all the time she told me to add aquarisol to the tank and just watch the fish. So far no problems I don't see white spots on any of the fish in the 36g so far so am keeping my fingers crossed.
As far as the cories I put them in QT yesterday got a good heater for that tank since my other one broke. I raised the temp in the tank to 84 degrees and added aquarisol and some salt a little less then a tsp. I did another 50% pwc tonight added aquarisol again and salt. The cories are swimming around and active which I am relieved. I am going to treat for one week and see what happens for now on I am going to QT my fish problem is my Qt is only 2.5g so if I get fish can only get one or 2 at a time at the most I don't have room for anything bigger. Thanks for the advise.

I'm not familiar with Aqaurisol, what's in it? Ich can go for a long time on your fish without being seen. It hides in their gills and sinuses. I quarantined some new fish for 3 weeks once, didn't see anything and they looked healthy so I put them in the main tank. 2 days later they had ich! Now I Q for at least a month. Good luck!

sounds like you are doing well and your lfs is actually giving you some decent advice. but yeah, always always always always quarantine new fish. it will save your other fish.

Yep. Always QT and I wait for minimum of a week between when the LFS gets new shipments in. By that time, the weaker stock is usually gone. Talk to them about when they get the fish in that you want.

OK well the cories are doing fine in QT. Aquarisol has copper salts in it and it can be used for ich and many other types of parasites and I think fungus too. You can use it as a preventative treatment or to treat disease and you can use it weekly if need be. My 36g fish are fine no further fatalities the fish are swimming around no problems. I have been doing wc's everyday on the QT and adding aquarisol to that tank. I am wondering how long I should go on treating them with the med. I add 3 drops daily after wc and aquarium salt.
How long should I continue QT for the cories? I am definitely going to QT my new fish for now on before adding to my main tank. My hubby thinks I am going overboard by doing that but I told him look what happenned when I added the other cories to the tank two died and the other was on its way. I am not sure if this was definitely ich since I see no signs of it on my other fish in my 36g no spots. Thank god!!!!!!!! But I am keeping a close watch on them. Thanks for the advise much appreciated.:grinyes:
I would guess maybe for another 1 -3 weeks?

Yeah I think QT the cories for another 3 weeks might be a good idea but am wondering if it is safe to continue medicating the cories for that long with the aquarisol. I can't see anymore spots on them but I want to make sure that whatever this disease was whether it was truly ich or some other parasite that it is completely gone. Monday will be a week since I started the medication so I know I have to medicate atleast until tomorrow but am wondering if I should continue medicating for a longer period of time.

What does it say on the bottle? Usually something like continue treatment for 3-5 days after last spots disappear. I'm not familiar with that medication but unless it says otherwise on the bottle, and if the fish show no adverse signs, I'd do another week and keep an eye on them. Did you remove the carbon from your filter?

I am not running a filter sponge so no carbon felt it unnecessary since am medicating the tank. The bottle doesn't really say anything on when to stop it can be used weekly as preventative. Today was a week since I started medicating. The fish are doing great. I am keeping them in qt

I am running the Qt filter without a sponge so no carbon. I have been treating with aquarisol for one week. The cories are doing great. The bottle of meds says as preventative tx use weekly but I have been using the med daily it has copper salt in it and they don't say when to stop the tx on the bottle. I am going to treat for atleast one more week and keep them in QT for another 3 weeks.

G'Day eveyone at Aquaria Central, I haven't been part of a chat group before but am hoping somebody can give me some information regarding identification of certian Corydoras after exhusting my books and being frustrated by the internet. I currently have in my tank Peppered corydoras (which are happily adding to the population on a daily basis) some Panda corydoras (still to young to breed I think) some Strebi corydoras (easily id'd) and a couple of mystery cory's. These include 3 of what may or not be c.julii (they where sold as this). 2 of these look the same with fine spotting patterns over their bodies and the tell tail black dot on the dorsal fin. The third one has similar markings but noticibly more blotchy or bolder markings again with the black dot on the dorsal fin. The other 2 mystery cory's I haven't come across again and am hoping I've fluked it and have a pair. These two are very shy only venturing out at night when the lights are out. They are best discribed as being a pale gray all over covered by very fine dots with no other markings. They have quite snub or blunt noses much more rounded than any of the other cory's. Even getting a photo of these guys is a problem as they stubornly remain hidden amongst the large weed planting all day. When I have caught these guys out they are quite happy following my large peppereds around and aren't freaked out by the guppies the bristle noses (who keep to themselves any way) or by the rather large golden gourami, only the lights upset them. So far these two are around 5-6cm but don't seem inclined to get as large as my monster peppered's. If anyone could help me with this it would be appreciated. Just bare in mind Cory species in Australia are limited with even panda and skunk not often found.

Welcome to AC Hunter! You should start a new thread for a new question but here's a link to lots of corys http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/genus.php?genus_id=1 Good luck, there a ton! We'd really need pics to have any chance of ID.
