I am setting up a 29 that I want to be planted. I am going to buy a shop light and use 2, 40w daylight 6500k bulbs. Will this be sufficent, i figure that's about 2.7 wpg?

it should be fine for low light plants and maybe a couple medium light plants.i have shop lights over my fish racks and they are sufficient

40 watt bulbs are 48in long, 29g tank is 30 in long so not all the light will go in the tank. 24in 20watt lights are often used over that length tank, so 2 bulbs= ~1.4 w/g, 3=~2w/g etc.

Your setup will like be putting in about 2.0 wpg. Good enough for low light plants like anubias, crypts and java fern. Stem plants will have a difficult time growing.

As I recommended in another thread, I think you would be better of purchasing a Coralife 65w fixture from drsfostersmith.com. That will give you some room to grow stem plants better, plus it would look better then shop lights over your tank.

i would rather go with the cfl bulbs vs shop lights. better yet a t5 or cf set up.
