I've been looking around for a new (used) 55 gallon aquarium and stand to start up a mbuna tank in a couple months, and among others I got this reply...

"Here is a picture of my sons 55 gallon tank. He is saving for a gaming computer and wants to sell it. He will not take less then $125. Comes with fish, lights, stand (which can be painted black) and Python cleaning system (worth $80). Let me know if you want to see it..
Thanks"

$125 is certainly a decent price I think, considering that the tank looks to be decent and clean, and it also comes with filter (I've got an XP3 too) and a python I could trade or sell later since I've got one... but I'm still a bit wary about buying used. I'm wondering what questions should I ask and things should I check before making the deal?

How old is it? Has it had anything but fish in it? Any chips/cracks/leaks/scratches? Does it hold water to the very top (why's it low in the picture)? Any damage to the trim or center brace? Is the silicone seal pealing anywhere? Has medicine been used (anything with copper)? What kind of filter does it have? (looks like an emperor to me?) Is the (ugly/fake) background just taped on?

Also, does that look like an aquarium stand to you? I'm leary simply because the base isn't the full 48".... is that something to worry about? I'd need to paint the stand black... think the cost for paint & supplies changes things? (I have no idea what kind of paint I'd need, etc.)

Works for me..looks good....I would go look at it and do a test on the water.

Fixed the image... any thoughts on the filter or stand? I should actually bring my API test kits? (and science coat, goggles, pocket protector to round off the nerdy/overbearing image I usually keep private) - I would have never thought of that... great bit of advice bob!

sounds like a good price to me

I didn't see anything specific about a filter, but take whatever he offers.

The test kit may reveal more about the status of the tank than what they say. I would just do an ammonia and nitrates test. Not that that should tell you not to buy it, but will let you know how to handle the fish and transfer to your place.

I figure if everything's going including the fish, the filter's included... it looks like an emperor to me based on the intake and the top looking like it's got room for some biowheels, but I've never had an emperor before.

I think that whatever tanks I check out, if they're running still my test kits are coming with, it'd make me feel a lot safer knowing what kind of condition it's in.

Any thoughts on the stand, it's what worries me the most?

My initial impression, from what little of it is visible, is that it is okay.
