I had some old gravel stored away at my parents. I scooped some out last tiem I was there and I just added it to the tank I was currently keeping my male betta Quartz in thinking it'd be better to have gravel in that tank instead of a bare bottom.

It let off fumes , weird bubbles and discolored the water. I immediatly scooped Quartz out and put him in my five gal in a few inches of water. I just lost my other male betta Sapphire to unknown causes and I don't want Quartz to die too.

What happened?.

no telling what got into it.....

what most likely happened is anaerobic pockets were let loose when you disturbed the gravel. They may have formed from not being moved around periodically... I am assuming the gravel wad still damp/wet.

Nope, it was long dry. Stored in a plastic bag in a bucket. I'm just glad I didn't put this gravel in with the new fish because I'd hate to have to move them emergency style.

did you even rinse it off first?
