Well as most of you know i work at a Local Fish Store in MI nice place but i dont agree with some of the desicons the manger makes :wall: well lately there has been this really nice kid about 14-15 yeays old that comes in every day on his bike and just looks arounmd for hours. ive talked to him a couple times but he doesnt say much. so today he came in and i said hi he said how are you and so on, i asked him if he had any tanks he said no saldy my parents dont have the money for a big tank like i want. i felt really bad, i asked him what fish he really like and he said Kribs. i told of really we just got a nice shipment of these guys in he asked if he could see them so i took him into the back of the store and showed him some albino one he feel in love with them :grinyes: i said how far do you live from here he told me about a mile i asked if his parents would care if i got him a 40 gallon tank s he called them and his mom said how are you going to pay for that i talked to her for a min. and said hes going to be my assistant. he looked shocked. i told him you will enjoy it. so i drove him home with 4 kribs 2 normal and 2 albino a 40 gallon fish tank a HOB fliter and a bag of sand it cost be about $400 but hes working for me without pay so it should be covered in no time i told him to use flower pots as deco. so i just thought id share with you what i went through today lol

That is awesome nano!

What a cool thing to do for a kid. He'll also have the benefit of learning the right stuff from you while working it off. Thanks for sharing... when I read the title, I was like "oh no" expecting the worst, but it put a smile on my face. Enjoy the good karma! :D

lol, sounds like a nice thing to do, but you completely missed the opportunity to teach the kid how important it is to cycle the tank before you get the fish. . . . . what's the plan for this now?

I agree too, this was a very nice thing that you did, I'm sure this kid will remember what you have done for him for a long time and hopefully he will repay the kindness to another when he gets older. :)

well the kid (james) came in today showed him around the place and what goes on before we open up we cleaned a few tanks, and feed the fish he seemed like hes enjoying his time here i tought him a few things aboust stocking and breeding, and a little about cycling just for you wchicken, but then my boss came in (he works from home and comes in every so often) he asked me to come into his office, he had something in his hand but i thought it was a large poster rolled up. we sat down and he said we are currently working with our wholesaler to sell stock online.... ( i was think dang it there goes my whole plan for selling online.) but thats not all he pulls out the poster thing and it turns out to be blue prints. he said im having the right side of the store taken down so we can add 250 Sq. feet more to the store. i said really this is actually really good some of our tanks are getting over stocked. but then the worst new of all he said he want 1500 gallons of water to be saltwater live stock! i was soo disappointed, (we are a fresh water fish store) he said is decision is finale. so im ****ed of that i cant sell to you guys and gals here online, but i cant disobey my boss...

Look at that as an opportunity to grow with the store. You can expand your knowledge and experience. SW is almost a requirement these days for an LFS to be profitable.

Thats pretty awesome. Do you have clearance to do stuff like that through the manager? My only concern, coming from the point of view of a small business owner (not me personally, family-owned business), is whether he is ok with having the kid work at the store, etc and not be on payroll. The issue is that if someone is not on payroll, and they get hurt somehow working at the store, the owner's insurance isn't going to cover it (since the kid is not technicall y an employee), and paves the way for a law suit. Trying not to be too negative, it would just suck for the guy to lose his store because the kid slipped on a wet spot or cut his hand on a peice of broken glass or something. In any case, its nice to see people are still willing to go out of their way to help others onec in a while.

sploke, you mentioned what I was going to ask about.. there are liabilities with the stores insurance..and the kid may not be covered for it..
as long as the boss knows your bases are covered.

now..look at marine as a new level for you..you think lights and filtration is important in FW..this is a new opportunity for you.
I moved into marine over 1 yr ago(nearly 2) and man it is a blast

it is a really noble thing you have done.
