Some info on my project first. I have a 37g tall tank and I'm not sure how I want to filter. I want to(scratch) need to save money, I have a second child coming any day now. I want to put the tank in our bedroom, because there is plenty of room and no where else in the house does it seem to work. So, I have been debating on getting a HOB or getting a canister. Noise would be a factor and have leaned to the canister for simply can hide it under the tank and want to keep the tank as close the wall as possible. I like the Rena XP2 or a Marineland Penguin 350. So, Advantages of one versus the other? Also what would the cost factors be. I'm using this tank as a stepping stone to Saltware down the road when the kids our out of college. Have plenty of time to prepare.

If it were me, I would go with a canister filter, but instead of the XP2, I would get an Eheim 2213. It only costs 79.99 on the petsmart website and can filter up to a 55 gallon tank.

What about the Eheim 2217? I was thinking of waterflow also. Petsmarts in my area don't have Eheim in stock, so that's why I looked at Rena.

Depending on budget, I'd suggest going with one of each. Maybe smaller sized, but with one of each you have redundancy and more freedom when it comes to cleaning.

redundancy is good. i would say two 2213 actually for a 37 gallon or say a XP2 and XP1 or a combo. also i would recommend a Marinland C-220. if you decide to go the hob route i would say go for an AC not a penguin while the penguin is effective the bio-wheel does make a bit of noise.

I used to only run HOBs (still do on my 20g) but after having an XP1 and an XP2 I must say canisters are flipping great. If you can afford one go for it. You should run at least 2 filters on a tank though, in case one clogs or fails. I run 3 filters on each of my FW tanks.

i don't know, i think you could get by with one xp2 or an xp3 on a 37g. What are your plans for stocking? I have an xp2 on my 36g and it does the job quite nicely. I do run an ac30 on it as well from time to time (i keep it running on the 36g when i am not using it for qt).

Just got my XP3 running on my 36 gallon bow front tonight... it's great, aside from being so quiet I'm afraid it's not working.

Hi, my name is Len and I have a filtration problem. I have XP2s with HOBs on 20G tanks...
